Japanese publisher Capcom are set to surprise and delight fans of one of their existing franchises with a sequel announcement at this year’s E3. The big news is that the follow-up in question is in development at one of Capcom’s Western studios, reiterating the publisher’s stance that all new IPs from the company will only be developed in Japan, with tried and trusted franchises getting farmed out to studios outside of the publisher’s homeland. This approach is seen as a direct response to some lacklustre new IPs originating from Capcom’s Western wing that went on to flop both critically and commercially. Games such as Bionic Commando and the disappointing Dark Void.
News of the sequel reveal first came to light during GameFly editorial director Garnett Lee’s Weekend Confirmed podcast. It has since been picked up by C&VG. Referring to Capcom’s new xenophobic development strategy, Garnett commented:
“Boy, their E3 bombshell puts that to test. I’m not going to spill it because I don’t want to make anyone mad, but boy their E3 bombshell puts that to test.”
What could the sequel be? Well, rumours have already been flying that UK based Ninja Theory are working on the next Devil May Cry. However, it could be something even more bombastic if other rumours suggesting the future of the Resident Evil series is outside of Japan are to be believed. Of course, we’d be super pleased if it simply turns out to be something like a new Onimusha.
