Halo 3 has “Outsold PS3 Exclusives”

27In an arrogant but somehow still rather throwaway Tweet, Microsoft’s Aaron Greenberg has declared Halo 3 has outsold most of the PS3′s exclusives, combined.
“Just in from research team,” he says, referring to NPD. “Halo 3 has outsold Resistance 1 + 2, Uncharted 1+2, Killzone 2 and God of War III COMBINED… wow.”
This being NPD, we’re assuming he’s tracking this sweeping comment via sales figures from the States, but if true – then yes, wow indeed, and just goes to show the power of Bungie’s FPS brand.

Gran Turismo has sold over 55 million copies, while Halo sold around 27 million. The Halo franchise only has half the total sales of the Gran Turismo series. Gran Turismo 3 is also one of the best selling games of all time with 14.89 million sold. When it comes to the new additions to both franchises I’m sure GT5 and Halo: Reach will sell like hot cakes. Reach sales will not matter in the overall scheme of things because do you honestly believe GT 5 will be a flop in the sales department? Keep in mind that Gran Turismo is a racing game, and it’s very impressive that in a culture of violence and space aliens a racing game still finds a way into the hearts of so many gamers around the world.
Next time Greenburg, you need to learn how to properly talk trash. Learn it quickly before you decide to tweet about Halo sales compared to the Mario franchise.”

Creative interpretation of the statistics can also be fun:
“360 has so few good games to choose from that everyone bought Halo 3″
My point is comparing the sales of a 360 exclusive to the sales of PS3 games is just plain stupid. Halo 3 didn’t compete against those, to say anything meaningful about the sales of a game you have to compare to the sales of other games available on the same console. (Ignoring the probably small number of people owning 2+ competing consoles)
