Earlier in the week Square Enix decided to tell the world that there is no Final Fantasy XIV for the XBox 360 and then went on to say they might do it anyway. It was very annoying and resulted in me talking about pineapples to try and cover my mistake of posting non-news.
Tanaka is back today with an update to the story. As we speculated, XBox Live is the problem.
“The main reason why we couldn’t go with Xbox 360 was the Xbox Live system. [Live is] different to the normal Internet environment, so when we wanted to introduce this game in the same environment as Windows PC it had to be PS3, so that was our choice. ”
“Microsoft has a different point of view: they want to have a closed environment for Xbox Live… We couldn’t come to an agreement on Xbox Live.”
It is a shame XBox 360 owners will lose out the next Final Fantasy as it’s… Oh hang on, Tanaka has not finished.
“We’re still talking [to Microsoft]“

Graphically wise, FFXIII wasn’t as good on the 360 then it was on PS3. Even so, they’re missing out on a lot of cash here.

Again its down to xbox live. internet gaming is progressing, and live want it all in its own little bubble.
its the same with steam works. this is the stage where xbox need to start having a more open mind, otherwise networks like PSN will start to progress further forward.

MS’s strick restictions and requirments on LIVE is what makes it superb service. It is a shame that it’ll cause 360 users to miss out on this game, but o well.
As a user of both systems and as someone who spends more time playing online than single player, i can say that my experience (and that of all my firends) with LIVE is superior to PSN (hopefully this changes with PSN Plus).
While i’m not sure what LIVE policies are preventing this game, i’m sure there is a good reason behind it. We all know how much MS loves $. And we al know how much $ a FF titles generates. So for MS to not make any exeption or comprimises, shows that they’d rather maintain the integrity of LIVE.

there is so much about Live that is only possible on a premium (ie. paid for) platform.
MS wouldn’t want to open the door for ever publisher to have this game working without subscription or that game, and before they know it the infrastructure is making a loss.
It’s a business decision by MS, and I’m sure Gold subscribers would rather miss a game and maintain the level of service they’re accustomed too

i cant stand MS, but i think its the correct choice. its the same as Apple and the app store. buy locking it down and having 100% control they can give a better service. maybe if the dev’s slightly altered things they could get it on LIVE

Hmmm while I do agree with your points, at the moment it really looks like Sony is really picking up the slack left behind.
There is a place for closed, exclusive access, but at the same time, you need to have some flexibility or else you will start losing ground such as here. Sony has already picked up certain extra features such as the BBC player which the Xbox cannot have due to its structure. If it’s also going to lose FFXIV, then I think of it as a sign that something is not quite right with Microsoft’s plans.

Pineapples aside, with Steam and MMO games coming to PS3, people are now starting to realize what Ken Kutaragi has been pointing out since 2005. That the PS3 itself is considered a PC in its own right. Sony’s console as an open platform has a huge advantage over the Xbox. I won’t be surprised if this approach goes any further, like, say, keyboard and mouse support on most games or running Apple OS X or Windows 7 for example

Basically SqEnix wanted MS to make an exception about allowing FFXIV to be available online for Silver members, and Microsoft though if they allow one then all publishers will be banging down their door, so they decided it wasn’t in their interests and said, no!
Fair enough

First they’ve already allowed at least two games do that (PSU, FFXI), that’s because the games ran on their own servers in order to allow cross platform gaming. I think the problem Microsoft have with cross platform gaming is that people might realize that they are getting exactly the same service on PC and PS3 for free, that Live customers are paying for.

If that’s the case how come Microsoft allowed Final Fantasy XI (the other mmorpg) on their platform which allows for cross platform play with PC and PS2 users. They’re just talking fud and its only a matter of time until this is on the 360

Don’t care to much if FFXIV comes out on the Xbox or not but I have to say, this article was amazing :D

I hope Microsoft do let the game onto Live servers. I really do, even though the only viable gaming platform this could possibly come out on that I own is the PS3 (My laptop isn’t exactly suited to gaming).
Why?
In an MMO, surely more players leads to more diversity, and more fun? Obviously, this only applies when it’s cross platform. Seriously, I want to see one big community.
I wonder could we add PC or 360 players to our friends list?
