We all know Rockstar San Diego created a bit of a masterpiece with Red Dead Redemption, and we all knew it was a bit of a looker, but perhaps not everyone realised it was quite so beautiful.
Digital Foundry, one of the best places on the internet for technical articles and video captures has put together a fantastic time lapse for the year’s best selling game. I could go writing a bit more of an introduction, but we all know you’re only here for the main event, so check it out below.
One thing I will say though and this is a bit of Pro Tip, on the original Digital Foundry post is a link to the master vid, so you can watch it in all its 720p 60fps glory and this is well worth doing, although I don’t know if there’s any restrictions on multiupload so you may need to be quick.

It’s quite impressive how rockstar have built this game, too easy to take it for granted when playing it. It’s supposed to look better on xbox isn’t it? I’ve only got it on ps3 and think it’s absolutely stunning on that, so god knows what xbox version looks like. I love the way you can see a mountain in the distance and ride over to it, seeing it get more and more detailed as you approach. The game really is a massive accomplishment.

It’s artistically beautiful but technically, there are failings which can be seen all of the way through the game. Texture detail up close it downright awful but I always forgive sandbox games as there’s just too much to build to give every item the same sort of love you’d give in Uncharted 2 and the like. However, for me, the pop-up on buildings and then the second-tier texture mapping loading were inexcusable. It was so jarring at first I sat there thinking “Really? Hadn’t we got past this when we moved to 360s and PS3s?”. It was terrible but thankfully didn’t detract from the game.

Makes me jealous…Haven’t got the funds to buy this game (and many others yet) so I haven’t had the chance to play yet. Soon though, soon!

Brilliant video, its a stunningly beautiful game. I love the shadows, the way they move is so accurate, and I love the colours in the sky at sunset.
