No Move Support For Naughty Dog’s Next Game

Naughty Dog’s co-president – Christophe Balestra – has been talking about the use of PlayStation Move in the developer’s next game.  It seems that fans of Sony’s new doo-hickey are set to be disappointed, as Naughty Dog are too far down the line with this unannounced project to incorporate Move’s motion capabilities:

“Maybe in the future. Right now, it’s kind of difficult because we’re so focused on the next thing. It would be too late for us to start thinking about that. Move certainly has potential.”

I for one am pleased that Naughty Dog haven’t seen the need to quickly shoe horn in an unnecessary control scheme just so they can have the little blue Move logo on the game box.  I guess this is the main advantage of not solely relying on one method of control like the Nintendo Wii.

  1. The really good news is that Naughty Dog apparently is well underway with something new!

    • Exactly what I was going to say!

    • Yea couldn’t agree more .

      • well, only if they mentioned wat the next title would be!
plus, hopefully it has at least 3d-support X)

    • Exactly what I was thinking =] I would assume that this is going to be Uncharted 3, but we shall have to see – could be that they’re bringing back a new Jak and Daxter title.

      • Remake of Crash Bandicoot. It’s gotta be. You heard it hear first.

      • I wish, problem is that neither Sony or Naughty Dog ever owned the IP. I think it’s Universal that own it (along with Sypro).

      • didnt they wash thier hands of crash after crash 3?

possibley even as late as crash bash?

      • Not quite. They managed to make Crash Team Racing, which is still my favorite kart racing game ever, and the Mario Party ripoff, Crash Bash. Despite being direct copycats of Nintendo franchises, the games are still spit-shined to oblivion, courtesy Naughty Dog’s stellar development.

      • really i thought CTR came out between crash 2 & 3, no?

definately my fave kart racer, my first D/L ever from psn, completed the story campaign the same night, which reminds me, i need to go back and get all the CTR tokens, saphires, and secret gems.

i wish psone classics had trophies : (

    • Dream Zone PLEASE!!

  2. Indeed very good news to read that they are hard at work with a new game, they are so very good at developing them.

    • Damn, fast returns are not always a good thing :S

What I meant to add is that it is also very good news that they don’t get ditracted by new (optional) tech and slammed on control methods.

  3. “Unannounced” = UC3 :D
I’d personally love another Naughty Dog created Jak game.. But I have a feeling that one is never going to see the light of day again :(

    • I’m not so sure as Heroes on the Move will highlight the likes Jak and Daxter again.

Maybe we’ll see a Jak and Daxter collection a bit like the sly one. The problem is there are a lot more Jak and Daxter games so they’ll either need to be selective or release a couple of bundles. A new Jak and Daxter would be perfect for a release after these.

It’s been a while since Naughty Dog have released a racing game which they’ve done on the ps1 and ps2. Maybe they have something similar in mind.

      • They generally go 1 2 3 then a racing game

  4. Excellent. An intelligent developer. Move is excellent, but i can’t see a good way it could be incorporated into an uncharted type game, if indeed that is what they’re making. Then again i’m not a game developer, so that’s probably why. I do hope it does get built into a lot more games though, not just games that are specifically designed for move, but where it’s an extra control method. I really don’t want it to end up as just a wii clone.

    • pppointer!!! Point-click kill baddie!

  5. Developers do seem to be looking at Move the right way. Examining what value it can add to their games or developing a game FOR Move rather than taking it on as a novelty.
I feared it might end up as an inferior alternative to the DS3 in a lot of games which would ultimately resign it to the back of a drawer.

    • With Tony and you on this one. Developers need to take an intelligent look at things and realise that Move is a different control system and isn’t to be crowbarred into everything. If they choose selectively then it can integrate seamlessly into some games. However, there are some it shouldn’t touch and some that should be made with the Move in mind from the ground up. We have so many touch-based games that will benefit from Move. Quick and easy to do due to the size of the titles in the first place.

The trick is to create a more “gamer’s game” which will keep both Move and DS3 controllers happy as relying on just Move sales would be foolish.

      • E.g. Ruse. I’m sure plenty of other games will come along that can be used with either standard controller or move. My initial impressions of it are that it is particularly well suited to strategy game. Come on sid meier get your skates on mate.

      • I’m guessing most touch-based games and games where you need to conduct things on a user-interface (eg. RTS) will work supremely well. Can’t see FPS working properly but I’m more than happy to be proven wrong.

For my money, I think we have a control system that bridges the gap between very simple Minis, Wii-type games and the more hardcore disc-based titles.

  6. I agree with the well made points above, Move isn’t suited for everything – Kung Fu Rider devs take note.

    • Only played the demo. Seemed dreadful. Worst one of the 9 move demos i played by miles.

      • I dunno waggle Racquet Sports is pretty shit

        waggle, waggle, waggle

  7. Its a shame that Sony hasn’t had one of their AAA studios (Naughty Dog, Studio Santa Monica, Studio Liverpool/Evolution etc) making a PSMove exclusive game for release around the launch to Christmas period

That would surely transform Move from an optional add-on with a softly-softly, try it you’ll probably like it approach, to an absolute cast iron, must have, day 1 purchase.

    • I agree. I’m loving sports champions, and have ruse on it’s way, but other than those i don’t really see a move title that i’m interested in. Think it’s going to be around 6 months to a year until we really start to see quality move games coming out.

    • Agreed, as much as the tech itself impressed me, I have been extremely underwhelmed with the games I have seen so far unfortunately. The only one which I remotely enjoyed was Start the Party, though I’m looking forward to see how RUSE controls using the Move controller.

    • Definitely. The main thing I felt was lacking from the launch line up was a decent ‘hardcore’ game. SOCOM 4 was set of a end of year launch, but slipped to 2011. I’m half glad they’re able to put in the time it needs, but also half disappointed that Move doesn’t get a real change to show off it’s ‘hardcore’ credentials.

    • I’m sure Sony would have liked to have had Killzone 3 and SOCOM 4 out before Christmas. They would probably have shifted the launch window of Move for them. As they’re going to miss Christmas it’s important for the PS3 to have Move before Kinect and Christmas.

Assuming lots of kids (and those that are kids at heart) wake on Christmas day with Move to unwrap they’ll be looking for what games to buy in the new year. Dead Space 2, SOCOM 4 and Killzone 3 aren’t a bad way to start the year.

It took a while before the Wii had a “must have” title outside of Wii Sports (which was bundled with it in most places). I think it will be some time before we see a must have Move or Kinect title. Killzone 3 could have been but there is no reason for Sony to make it Move only.

      • Not meaning to pick holes but surely Zelda came out at launch for the Wii? :)

  8. If it is Uncharted 3, I don’t think it would be good to ever have move in.
    Whereas 3D, I bloody hope so :D.

    • I’m not sure how I feel about the idea of Move controls in the next Uncharted. Though Im not a huge fan of motion controls, Resident Evil 4 was great on the Wii as it felt natural and made aiming a lot easier. If they were to do the same with Uncharted I think I would prefer this over using a standard DS3

  9. Please let them be working on u3!

    • Well underway … next year release?? :-P

  10. If uncharted came out with both normal dualshock and move capabilities i think the game would be truly unbeatable in the review board.heres hoping that it will. if not i would love to see a new jak and daxter game.
