JAW Comments on 360 Stranger’s Wrath

It does seem a little strange, Oddworld: Stranger’s Wrath, an Xbox exclusive title, set for the refurbishment treatment but only due for a PS3 release. There is logic behind the madness, however, with developer Just Add Water responding on their site to the many complaints from 360 fans displeased that they won’t be able to enjoy the updated title.

Confirming that the studio are working with Microsoft to bring the game to Xbox LIVE (though are unable to go into the finer details), JAW clearly outlines the technical challenges they’re facing if they’re to make what appears to be the impossible possible.

“The final decision is NOT ours. One thing we can discuss in regard to the 360 version is the size of the game. On XBLA there is a 2GigaByte size limit we have to adhere to, currently the title weighs in at 2.1GB and that is without any updates, so either we have to pull a miracle out of the bag with some type of amazing compression system, or ask Microsoft to increase their 2GB limit, however this limit is apparently hardware led, so please let us try and make a miracle happen.”

Christmas is just around the corner. That’s when miracles usually happen, right?

  1. What on earth kind of hardware limitation is that?

    • It might be an arbitrary rule they came up with to keep the 20GB owners happy. Bit crap, whatever the reason.

    • It sounds similar to nintendo’s 48meg restriction on wiiware, but they have the excuse of only having 512mb of internal memory/storage.

  2. Dont understand the limit when full games can be downloaded

    • I’ve read that Xbox Live marketplace uses a different file structure, therefore no limitations.

  3. Seems odd to have a file size limitation for XBLA content but allow Games on Demand up there. Some of those must be larger than 2Gb, right? I’d rather have access to some of the great creative content and even remakes on XBLA than the hugely overpriced “classics” they put on GoD.

  4. Haven’t MS made exceptions to their game limit before, or was that back when it was something silly like 500MB?

Looks like MS is being disadvantaged by storage issues in the digital space now as well as disc games. Couldn’t they split the game in two halves (like they do with discs) or maybe remove some of those CG cutscenes?

I wonder what hardware issue it is, doesn’t the 360 use the same file system as the PS3? The PS3 has some monster sized PSN downloads for example some of the Move demos topped 3.5GB, and wasn’t the R&C demo in two halves as it totalled 6GB!

    • AFAIK they allowed people to go over the old 500mb until they raised it to 2gig, I’m not sure what’s happened since then, and if projects are allowed to go over that whether they have to pay extra in terms of the fee they pay the platform holders for each copy sold, which could make it uneconomical to release

  5. ‘It does seem a little strange, Oddworld: Stranger’s Wrath, an Xbox exclusive title, set for the refurbishment treatment but only due for a PS3 release’

No, because Oddworld was on PS1 first, then went Xbox exclusive.

‘the many complaints from 360 fans displeased that they won’t be able to enjoy the updated title.’

Oh please!, These are just stupid fanboys who probably never even heard of Stranger’s Wrath (99% of Xbots had PS2s) and just want it because it’s on PS3.

    • RAGE!!!

    • Yes, because the GAME, not the series, was an Xbox exclusive. This article is about Oddworld: Stranger’s Wrath. Not Oddworld as a series. You’ll note that Oddworld isn’t even mentioned in the title.

    • it is funny how people switch from console to console,i am willing to bet that if ps4 comes out a year earlier than xbox720 that xbox360 owners would switch to Sony and vice versa for ps3 owners to Microsoft, people are always in a hurry.

  6. Don’t Playstation Mini’s have a size limit? I’m sure MS have thier reasons and everyone needs to work to those limits. Not that I care particularly as I gave my Xbox (aka worlds noisiest console) to my step-son
