It seems that Outrun, the sideways-cornering arcade point-to-point racer, has been pulled from the EU (and AUS) PSN Stores. A comment in a thread over on GAF alerted us to the unfortunate fact that it has gone from the UK PS Store and there were a few later comments confirming that it was also removed from Swedish and Australian PS Stores.

We’ve just checked and can add our own confirmation to the list. We can also say that if you already purchased the game it should still be available via your download queue.

We have no idea why this might have been removed, our speculation ranges from “Perhaps licences clashed with Ferrari: The Race Challenge” to “I was just too awesome at it and I broke the scoreboard”. Whatever the reason, it’s not there any more.

    • I remember Spyhunter on the Spectrum, it was awesome. Didn’t it get a remake a few years back that flopped though?

    • Yes, loved it – but not the PS2 remake

      • I bought this and it was ok but it will never ever replicate those youthful days in the 80′s playing it in my local Arcade.

Just gonna go put some Beastie Boys License to Ill on to get all nostalgic bahh……

      • The PS2 remake was actually really good, at least I thought so. Fun gameplay and crazy futuristic car but with extra challenges and goals for the hardcore. The last mission was a bit shite but otherwise it was a good game.

      • Which PS2 remake? The first one was amazing, the others (2 and Nowhere to Run (starring The Rock), not so good

    • Chase HQ was my favourite! We need more Taito & US Gold HD re-makes.

      • Wonder if we can get some Imagine Software, Code Masters (yes separate words in those days) and Ocean… I think some work may be needed bringing their back catalogue to a HD generation

    • I loved playing Spy Hunter in the arcades back in the day. The Peter Gunn Theme music used in the game is great.

    • I loved Spyhunter on the ps2. Was in the first batch of games I got for it. Although I remember my save kept corrupting so I played throughout it about 5 times! The sequel with the Rock was a bit pants tho….

  3. Maybe with today’s release of Ferrari: The Race Experience, Outrun has “lost” the ability to use the Ferrari?

    • That’s what I said!

    • Maybe Sony found an exploit that could be used with it. It seems like they don’t mind deleting anything that could cause harm to their consoles security…

      :P

  5. I was just about to buy this yesterday (got my G27 steering wheel and fancied some arcade action)… thought I was going mad when I searched the store.

    • I can’t imagine a game like that would work amazingly well with a wheel. Be a bit like Burnout which is fun for five minutes but way too hard to play ‘properly’.

      • You never played Outrun in the arcades then??

      • Yeah but the wheel was built for it and only had about 90 degrees movement.

      • I did I was rubbish (lol arcade with a wheel)

      • You know that you can set the range of movement for most wheels – just because it can do the full 900 degrees, doesn’t mean that the game has to use it. It can lock quite nicely at 90.

  6. Now this is sad, as lots of people will miss out on the fun. but, with this pulling of the title, it brings to my attention the future of gaming. If we get to a stage that games are all DLC, we could be left with no ‘classic’ or ‘retro’ games to play in the future. As it stands, i can pop down the road any buy a Megadrive with Sonic for about £15…what if a new IP is so good, we want to play it 15 years down the line, but its DLC only and no longer on servers. This story is another BIG reason to keep gaming physical IMO

  7. Thats a bit odd :S Guess il never get the online trophies for this game, no-one was ever on, and with no-one to buy it.. hmm..

  9. ferarri game looks sheeeeeeeeeight

    • The Ferrari Challenge / Supercar Challenge is the closet thing to Gran Turismo on the market . Its excellent and handles superbly .

      • ferrari challenge was passable, handled ok, but looked like a dead dog’s dick and was patched, unpatched, broken, made worse, then eventually they gave up on it and did supercar challenge. i tried the demo/beta of that and it suffered the same faults as FC and i had no confidence they would sort them out for release. I don’t see this version of FC being any different.

As for outrun, apparently Sony have been told by Sega to take it down, so thats what they’ve done.
