Last week there were rumours that a HD upgrade to Halo was in the works for a 2011 release. Whilst not completely dousing the flames, Microsoft Game Studios Corporate Vice President Phil Spencer has certainly put a damp cloth over them by saying:
“I don’t think it’s necessarily a bad idea. I’m going to think about it from the customer’s perspective, and are we really delivering something of value to the customer at a price that they want?
We obviously have a lot of new things going on, so the thought of re-doing a bunch of things is probably difficult to just weave into the overall portfolio.
If you can provide real value to the customer, there could be possibilities for that, but I don’t spend a lot of time thinking about it.”
I tend to disagree with his views. The God of War collection has already proven that, if done right, HD re-releases can be fantastic value, and I’m genuinely tempted by at least three of the upcoming makeovers.

I think they are a great opportunity to get games you’ve missed. Or replay great games you’ve loved, also trophies help a lot. I think a lot of people will buy these collections just to get so many trophies for a budget price.

i think hd releases are great for games you missed. i got the 1st splinter cell, loved it and just never got round to buying the rest, so when the hd remake of that comes out, im getting it. on an irrelevant note, my ps3 just ylod’d for the 3rd time this year. i think il be buyin a slim. every article that contains the theme of games at the moment just makes me want to cry. :(

my slim Ylod’d last weds, 5 days out of warranty. Luckily they replaced it no questions asked, arrived yesterday.
Only thing that gets me is i get a refurb, and only 3 month warranty

Hey I had a refurb when my launch day 60gb packed in. The refurb has lasted longer than the original… Still going strong – but might be tempted to switch to a white slim when / if he come to the UK.

I think the HD collections are a great idea. Just releasing 2 great games on one disc is value for money, not to mention people playing through games they missed the first time whilst the veterans can face new challenges through trophies they didn’t have the first time round.

I think HD remakes have a positive and negative side for the PS3. The positive is that we get an update to great games that should be availiable to those that missed them first time round and for new players alike, plus we get trophies. But the negative is that while we have HD remakes I can never see a PS2 emulator coming out for the PS3.
I think microshaft are missing out on a good idea by not re-releasing updates for some original xbox classics. But again as they can get Live members to download the originals for MS points, and always have points left over, I can’t see them doing it.

Surprising – bet the 360-ers would love to see PGR and PGR 2 re relased to name a couple. Dont know how extensive the Xbox Back Cat is but im guessing its not as vast as the PS2. My flat is testament to this as I reckon I have 100 – 130 PS2 series’ that are simply epic….

They released Perfect Dark HD, and I really enjoyed that. I think HD remakes are a great idea, as I imagine they are much cheaper to make and they appeal to the nostalgia we feel for old games, loosening our wallets somewhat!

Splinter Cell trilogy seems an obvious one – does this mean it won’t come to ps3 either?
cleric20
Really looking forward to the PS3 Splinter Cell trilogy which is scheduled to hit next month.
Seems odd that M’soft aren’t milking the older games – I’d like to see a MechWarrior HD pack!

Ah, i wasn’t sure but glad to hear it’s def coming to PS3 – next month? Damn my wallet’s going to suffer!

But that’s just because a general PS3 does not play PS2 games; it is different with the Xbox family i suppose?
Charmed_Fanatic
no because Xbox360 does not play Xbox games

I think Microsoft are just playing it cautious rather than being ignorant to the situation here (for a change) it makes sense that they would not commit to HD remakes untill the planned PS3 ones are released so they can see how they sell. Although considering reaction I think they will do alright, I’ll certainly be buying the PoP and Splinter Cell HD trilogies, I would loe for Konami to release an MGS trilogy with MGS1,2 and 3 also. I love those games and they would be breathtaking with today’s graphics.

An MGS4 re-release “with Trophies and 3D” as Kojima wanted would also be appreaciated.

*appreciated, of course.
