Crystal Dynamics’ art director Brian Horton has declared that Tomb Raider reboot will feature a notable absence of titillation.
“As far as sex appeal, we are always thinking about making a character that people want to play, and part of that is a level of attractiveness and being drawn to Lara… But we don’t want to play up sexuality for sexuality’s sake. We are constantly talking about context and motivation on this project.”
Yes, massive jiggling norks are out and ‘motivation’ is in. Our gaming heroine is no longer to be objectified for having a very pert bottom squeezed in to those oh-so-very short shorts. Stop looking at her bum, you are meant to be admiring her intelligence.
“Lara is a lover of archaeology and she has these book smarts. Her brains are another huge part of her sex appeal. She is an attractive girl who doesn’t play up her looks, but she is super smart and she is very ambitious.”
Anyone hoping for a hint of sauciness as Lara scampers across the mysterious island she has been shipwrecked on is also out of luck;
“Her skin is still bare on the arms and there are going to be rips and tears on her clothes, but it won’t be about being revealing. It’s a way of saying that through these tough situations, there is a beauty and vulnerability coming through.”
“I think that is sexy in its own way. There is a different tone we are going for across the board, and Lara Croft as a sex object isn’t our goal.”
I’m not sure many gamers will look at her cart wheeling across the landscape and think “Wow, Lara has a BSc in Entomology, I am so attracted to her!”

I’d be worried about dust, cobwebs and if her dungeon gates had been kicked in.

good. this is hopefully a step towards women being portrayed as people rather than eye candy in games. With games like heavy rain, red dead and now this things could change

Because men in games are not stereotyped?
OK, we’re not supposed to look at tits and ass this time around, judging from the promo pictures this one is supposed to appeal to those that like their women bruised and bleeding?
Games are about making money. Period. If giving the main character big tits mean making more money they will. If claiming she is intelligent and not an object means making more money they will. If doing both means being a liar and making more money they will. I’m betting they choose door three.

You have no idea. When I’m choosing what game to buy the only criteria is the size of the mains airbags.

So a special edition of Dead or Alive and a strong lock for the door. Got it. ;-)

Blimey, you mean she’s got more than one brain, the looks might be irrelevant, she’s gonna look well odd.
Oh, but it’s part of her sex appeal – you what?!?!

Makes no odds to me to be honest, Lara’s goodies were never very oogle-worthy to me, but then again I’m not of the persuasion to fully appreciate them to be fair. `I crack out my copy of Uncharted for that.
But if the game is a success it would be nice to know it was on it’s merits, and not Lara’s.

You missed the word ‘one’ from inbetween ‘out’ and ‘crack’

Took me a while to get that lol. That’s certainly not true, well only very rarely, every now and then, occasionally … always.
