In a desperate attempt to appear multiple times on every website in the world, Sony and Rockstar have decided to kiss and make up and issue a joint statement on the official blog.
“We have received a very small number of customer support questions about PS3s overheating or shutting down while playing L.A. Noire,” says Patrick Seybold, corporate director of being corporate and speaking about corporate things.
“At this time, Rockstar Games and Sony can confirm that neither L.A. Noire or firmware update 3.61 are causing the PS3 hardware to overheat,” he said, somewhat contradicting what a Rockstar employee said yesterday.
Well, it’s not the weather, that’s for sure.
“We are both committed to working hard to find solutions to this and any issues that may arise,” continues Seybold, before listing a few ways to get in touch with both Rockstar and Sony.
If it’s not the game, and it’s not the firmware, that kinda only leaves the console user, doesn’t it?

I don’t see how a game can cause the PS3 to overheat as it would have to change the core operating code. I would have thought Sony would have that securely locked away…. then again after the last month!

Tis a bit silly innit.

Just a bit.

If it was unoptimised and caused the load on CPUs & GPUs to spaz out at the same time it was trying to do something else

There’s something wrong with the hardware if software can cause permanent damage. I mean, do you want developers to be afraid of adding that new effect or feature because they’re afraid of the console catching fire? No, you want Sony/MS to put some safeguards in place so that doesn’t happen.
PS To extrapolate on safeguards, I mean, good fans, of a size that makes them actually useful and a lower max heat auto shutdown. If the console can’t handle the heat it outputs at full power, then they should have considered having a lower clocked console at launch.

In a case like yes it would really be the user, they might be playing too long. I don’t plan to buy this game anyway.

Hmm maybe i’ll check the internets tomorrow before i start playing LA Noire – just in case there’s a sudden epidemic of YLOD.. ;)

It only does everything, except grill bacon & sausages, so stop trying.

Played this game yesterday for 4 hours straight, no freezing on mine. Fingers crossed for the rest of this great game.

My PS3 is the 80GB version (320GB Now).

I agree that the overheating may simply be down to people not taking very good care of their consoles but …. I have always been very careful about this issue (even more so as my son is on his 4th 360!) and my launch day fat box still died on me.
There may be another issue here in that shouldn’t your product be fit for purpose? Perhaps the heat sink and fan just aren’t up to the job, or there aren’t enough vents.
We need some clever spark to come up with self-cleaning vents :-) Or a turbo button for the fans to blow all the dust away (I’m patenting that last idea btw)

Heading into town today, to pick mine up. (& an industrial fan)

I have noticed that LA Noire does access the disc a lot. This is not something I was aware of while playing Uncharted 2.
