Claws On: Mortal Kombat Freddy Krueger DLC

1, 2, Freddy’s coming for you. 3, 4, better lock your door. 5, 6, grab your fight sticks. 7, 8, better stay up late. 9, 10, never sleep again. The latest DLC for Mortal Kombat is none other than Freddy Krueger and he’s now available on Xbox Live and the PlayStation Network. Also available are the classic costumes for Sub-Zero and Cyber Sub-Zero free of charge.

Although this version of Freddy is not based on Robert Englund’s iconic portrayal of the character, Krueger’s personality resonates perfectly with the rest of the Mortal Kombat roster. He’s one of those unexpected guest characters in a fighting game that turns out to be really awesome. And in case you’re wondering, NetherRealm actually explains why he’s equipped with two claws.

Freddy’s claws are his main gimmick. He has one attack in particular called the Hell Spike with three different ranges. Freddy sticks his hand into the ground and unleashes a giant claw from the floor and knocks the opponent into the air. The enhanced version leaves the opponent staggering for a few seconds, which allows you to do pretty much whatever you want afterwards.

[drop2]He also has two different types of projectiles. Glove Toss is your standard fireball that travels across the screen very fast. He recovers incredibly fast so it’s pretty safe to do. Freddy Fingers is a low fireball that seems to travel at almost the same speed. The animation for this move looks neat since the claw literally runs through the screen. All three claw techniques give Freddy some rather good zoning capabilities.

Sweet Dreams is another attack that temporarily stuns the opponent and puts them into a dream state. You’re free to do whatever mixup you can think of during this time. If you time it right you can trap your opponents with his move and force them to block on wakeup after certain combos. The green goo falls down relatively slow so it’s easy to avoid if you see it coming.

Freddy even has a teleport that can be used to move forward or backwards. The teleport travels about midscreen and when you’re close to the opponent he’ll appear on the opposite side. The recovery time after this move is very fast and it almost allows him to attack immediately after. What’s even more useful is that you can use the teleport to escape during the middle of a combo. It depends on the attack used but it seems like the most useful strikes can be cancelled out of. This means that it’s going to be very difficult for the other player to punish your attacks. If you make a mistake you can just teleport away to safety.

Here’s a video showing off a few of Freddy’s basic combos.

Here’s a very easy corner combo to do that will hit your opponent for nearly 40% damage. It’s ridiculously easy since you’re only repeating the same chain twice.

As you can see, Freddy can deal tons of damage with some minimal effort. Once you get the timing down for his juggles you’ll find yourself doing above 30% damage after every opportunity. What’s great is that he can start combos off from a low, high, or overhead attack. His mixup possibilities are endless, especially when you use the EX ground claw or sleeping spell since they both stun the opponent. He’s especially dangerous in the corner since his juggles are a lot easier to do.

Krueger’s X-ray is also very useful since it’s extremely fast and it can hit the opponent from mid screen. Quite a few of his combos utilize a bar of meter so it might not be worth using in the long run. However, Freddy does build meter faster than most characters since he can just teleport backwards and throw claws from full screen without worrying too much.

NetherRealm really went all out with Freddy. He has a great moveset that’s easy to utilize and his damage output is definitely above average. He’s a strong keep away character and can just as easily rush his opponents down. His tricky mixups are going to cause a lot of problems for players unfamiliar with his combos. Even if you do know what’s coming he can easily just do something completely unexpected. Freddy is undeniably a great character with lots of potential. He might even be a bit too good.

It seems like Freddy Krueger is the last DLC that’s going to be released for Mortal Kombat for the time being. Be sure to check out our hands on impressions for Skarlet, Kenshi, and Rain if you haven’t done so already. It was a lot of fun writing about each character. Hopefully everyone enjoyed this series while it lasted.

Here are Freddy Krueger’s fatalities and babality.

  1. Nice, but I think I’ll get Skarlet first. She seems to be the best DLC fighter, from what I’ve seen.

    • There’s now a bundle on PSN that includes all 4 DLC. Might be cheaper that way :D

      • Dammit! I wish they would announce these things on advance, like the XBL season pass.

    • She is the best, however I haven’t tried Rain out yet!

      • Rain is really good! That’s my pick as the best DLC :D

      • It helps Rains a klassic character imo. MK9 was everything i wanted from a revival of the klassic MK, but it just didn’t have Rain. Now hes out i’m eager to get him! (i’ll wait for a EU bundle).

  2. It’s grab your crucifix, not fight sticks! XD

    • lol I’m glad someone caught that.

  3. “Nightmare on NetherRealm Street” <- Ha!

  4. Can’t wait to get these all 4 in one pack on the PSN Store soo!

  5. First CoD and now Mortal Kombat…
Since he can’t invade our dreams no more, he invades our games…

  6. When you say he’s not based on Robert Englund’s portrayal, what do you mean? He looks pretty similar to me, other than having 2 sets of claws?

    • It’s not Englund’s likeness at all. It looks more like the new one that nobody liked if anything.

      • It’s the re-make of Freddy not the original movie ;)
Robert Englund remains the best Freddy!

  7. Nice tie-in. It would be cool to see some more horror icons be added. Pinhead anyone?

  8. Cool. They should add all the old skool icons like Jason, myers, pinhead, candyman and so on….

  9. sorry to piss on everyone’s chips, but, Freddy only has one knife glove…not two…never two

    • read the very last sentence of the second paragraph. ^_^

      • I did…and I stand by my comment…why they feel the need to change an iconic character is just complete stupidity.

    • Don’t you read Delriach’s Hands On Impression? o_0
Anyway going to try all characters on Arcade to see their story ^^
Looking very forward to it. As usual Delriach Thank You =D
Can’t wait to juggle my opponents lol.
Yes Delriach the series was brilliant top writing and skills ;)
Be sure to sign up for some MK Meets on Tuesdays. Had a fight against Yiddy93 and my oh my, he is awesome with Cyrax when it comes to combos!
Also where are the fatalities list for all 4 if you don’t mind
      Thanks

  10. Fantastic Insight delriach! Im gonna have to wait until payday for him and the previous fighter. But i still freaking love this game!
