Which GAME Stores Have Been Closed?

Looks like the first day of GAME going administration has been particularly brutal.

As far as I can gather, it looks like the 277 stores that have been shut down (between GAME and Gamestation) have been judged entirely on profit, and those not meaning some magical number have had the dreaded phone call from PricewaterhouseCooper.

That’s 277 stores, or just over 2,000 jobs.  Not, as some found it necessary today, something to make light of.  I’ve had family and friends work in GAME over the years, at various levels, and today has been a real shitter for the UK high street and the industry in general.

My own personal condolences to anyone affected.

  1. Wooo, my local hasn’t been closed (yet)

  2. Roughly 14 closed in Northern Ireland and I think I’ve been in each one of them.

    :(

    Thoughts to everyone affected.

  3. Well mine hasn’t gone in Chelmsford, which is surprising.

  4. “That’s Asda price.”

  5. The Swansea store that has been shut is a Gamestation. Looks like the 2 Game stores are plodding along

  6. So for Glasgow that leaves Braehead, Glasgow Fort and (I think) Silverburn – all of the “out of town” shopping centres, with all of the city centre ones shut. If they’re making the initial decision based on profitability that’s an interesting view of shopping habits. I was at a conference about the Glasgow city centre economy a few months back and it was all very optimistic but I wonder how much damage out-of-town shopping centres are doing to traders in Argyle/Sauchiehall/Buchanan Street.

Terrible news all in, though – hope the administrators can find someone to pick up the business and get it going again.

    • Ooops sorry, also leaves the one in St. Enochs that wasn’t in Hamleys – forgot about that one.

  7. The Wakefield shop down Kirkgate had been shut ages because they opened a new one in the new shopping complex at Trinity Walk

  8. I’m actually upset to see the Newcastle Fenwicks one close. When I lived in Ncl I always used to shop there, great bunch of staff who were always willing to have a good chat (helped by the occasional appearance of a super-fit red-head who worked there sometimes ;p ). While I wouldn’t say they were mates, I certainly knew a few of them well enough to have a chat if we bumped into each other on a night out. I always used to go in and have a browse when my other half was doing her thing at the salon place just down the way from there.
I remember trading in my PS2 stuff there to get my launch day PS3! I always used to buy my games from there, yeah it was more expensive than online but generally not by huge amounts and I was prepared to pay £5 quid more if it helped keep people in jobs (same reason I never use self-checkout in supermarket, going to a cashier might take longer but it’s giving someone a job, a little inconvenience for me can mean a lot for someone else).

    Sad day

  9. White Rose store in future then, real shame so many people are suffering today.

  10. The 2 in Bournemouth that have closed, one a Gamestation, the other a Game, suggests a big part of the problem. They were both on the same road, less that 1 minute walk apart.

Why did Game feel the need to (and were allowed to?) gobble up their opposition and then keep neighbouring stores open?

I see that both the Game & Gamestation in Poole are missing from the list. It would make sense that they’re more profitable as they’re nearly 10mins apart and therefore not necessarily sharing the customer footfall.

I can’t help but feel Game’s management brought their own downfall through uncompetitive pricing and a ridiculous location strategy which is essentially greed.

My condolences go out to the employees who have been shafted.

    • Glasgow was the same – a Gamestation and GAME on the same street about 30 seconds walk away from one another. Another GAME two minutes walk from there in a shopping centre, and then five minutes walk from there would put you at another shopping centre with a GAME and a GAME concession in a toy shop.
