“The Last Of Us” Can Be Played While It’s Still Downloading

Taking cues from one of the PlayStation 4’s key new features, Naughty Dog’s The Last Of Us will be playable as it downloads, should you opt for the (no doubt massive) digital version.

Speaking to GI, Naughty Dog said that when the game releases in the middle of June, you’ll be able to start playing it when the game gets to about 50% downloaded.

We’d suspect this isn’t nearly the same tech that the PS4 uses, and that there’ll be an initial download and install followed by the rest of the game which simply downloads in the background.

Regardless, this is to celebrated. The two level demo is huge, so we can only imagine how big the full game will be – the option to start before it’s all downloaded is great.

  1. I feel that this is a game for Blu-ray.

  2. It shouldn’t be too hard to format a game that’ll download the engine, assets and then some levels. PS4 should just be more capable because of the RAM and separate chips. It certainly is good and clever for naughty dog to do this though, might make the big download more worth it for buyers no doubt

  3. Good way to test it by using inferior tech and higher limitations. Could give them loads of data and a bit of an upper hand when developing next gen.

  4. Game should already be available for purchase and now, since the game has gone gold, be available for preloading. When eveything is downloaded, installed you just simply download an activation key, on release date, to start playing the game. Kind of the same thing with 1hr of PS+ try before you buy, full game download.

    • They have already done this with a few games on the store, not unlikely they will do the same with TLU.

The preview is around 6,7GB, which is defiantly pretty big for two levels :)

      • I hope so because it will be a pain getting decent download speed on release date :)
I think about 20-25gb for this title…maybe too much? How did God of War fare with game size? I know Mass effect 3 had 15gb.

      • MLB13 was 25gig. Took almost as long to install as it did download

  5. I can’t wait to try the Demo :P I got it on the GoW:A disc game but have to wait a few more weeks to play it which is a bummer :( + i haven’t watched any TLoU videos(only the 1st 2 ages ago) or read anything about the game to so far LoL:D (it makes playing the games sooooooooooo much better when you haven’t seen most of it online)

  6. I’m really looking forward to this, but have since found out that I’ll be “out of action” until at least a couple of weeks after this releases. Bollocks etc, etc. :(
