GTA Online Corrupting GTA V Save Files

As well as all of the errors when trying to access the online component of Grand Theft Auto V, and the issues with characters not yet saving to the Rockstar cloud servers, it seems as though GTA V is corrupting save files, due to the way the game switches between protagonists.

This sectioned part below doesn’t spoil anything major story-wise, but look away now if you don’t want to know a small detail from around 60% into the game.

If you’re at a point in the game where you’re unable to play as Michael, then the game will automatically switch back to him when it fails to connect to GTA Online. This means that since he isn’t playable at this point, it effectively breaks the game.

Switching to either of the other characters means that you won’t find their missions as you’d expect, so the save is essentially broken, and you’ll miss out on this mission entirely it seems.

Tread with caution if you’re at this point in the game, we’d suggest just waiting until GTA Online is more stable but we know how hard that is ourselves!

  1. Yup. just came to warn you guys too. jeeze . only the videogames industry can get away with selling you a half finished , broken product , & not offer refunds, just ” Bare with us” ha ha ha

  2. Oops

  3. Loading a previous save should fix it though – I found I couldn’t switch characters after a failed connection to GTA Online and loading the autosave from minutes before sorted things out.

As with any game the days, if you aren’t autosaving and manual saving at regular intervals, you’re doing it wrong.

  4. I just got to that point in the story and was thinking of giving Online another go, thanks for the warning Blair!

  5. Looks like I will wait for the weekend until I play the Online part. Hopefully it will be safe and playable by then.

  6. There’s been a load of reports of R* servers being overloaded so I thought I’d wait a few days before trying it, glad I did.

  7. Jeez thanks for the heads up. I’m going to wait until the smoke clears in a few days or so.

  8. Thankfully there is so much to do in the Offline mode that this shouldn’t be too much of a burden.

    Still, not cool R*.

  9. Looks like it’s back to dragons dogma for me!

  10. Constantly making updated backup saves of the game to USB stick and plus cloud. Precaution from day one when all of the problems were reported.
It’s a shame to see all of this crap happening to such a great game.
