Rumour: Final Fantasy VII Is Being Remade For PS4

Tonight for the first time, just about half past ten, for the first time in history it’s gonna start raining men. It’s raining men, Hallelujah! Except it’s not, obviously, and in other rather far fetched news rumour has it that Final Fantasy VII – you know, the really good one – is being remade for PlayStation 4.

That’s remade – not HD’ified, not re-released – completely remade. Previously Sqaure Enix have said that this was completely impossible as it would be such a huge task it would be the same as creating a brand new game.

SiliconEra are the source of this rumour and they have a pretty good track record when it comes to the Japanese publishers, and they don’t publish any old gossip so the remake rumours may just be true. According to the website the new game “will use a more modern art style for Cloud, similar to his appearance in Dissidia Final Fantasy or Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children.”

The game is allegedly being remade for FF VII’s 20th anniversary which by my reckoning will be January 2017.

By the way, apologies for in the intro I’m just in a very good mood today and that song has been stuck on my IJ.

  1. So far this must be the most out-there rumour of the week, but it’s a good one! Yay for more remakes, i really mean that, despite them taking devs attention away from making new stuff some of them are actually bloody excellent and often harken back to simpler gameplay and more fun.

  2. Despite this being unlikely I am excited, love FF7.

  3. Interesting, if it’s being completely remade how different is it likely to be from the game that people remember?

  4. I’d be quite happy if they did do a remake but I’d be ecstatic if they remade IX too.

  5. It’s that week up until E3 where everyone is making up the most ridiculous rumours they can manage, hoping that at least one of them will somehow turn out to be true, and if it doesn’t, well, all that increased traffic to websites means more advertising money.

It seems unlikely, but the reaction to Squeenix trolling everyone last December and announcing a simple port of the PC version to the PS4 wasn’t quite what they were expecting. Did someone suddenly think “Shit, that didn’t go as planned. Can we knock out a proper remake in a year or so?”

Is it more likely than The Last Guardian making an appearance this week? Or Shenmue suddenly getting a shiny HD remaster and hope for a 3rd game?

    • I think you may be surprised…

      • Is it really a surprise if there are a thousand different rumours about all sorts of unlikely things and one of them just happens to turn out to be true?

A proper surprise would be something nobody had even thought of. Something not rumoured to be happening at all.

A remake of FF7 (either of the others I mentioned) would probably get a reaction of “Oh, that’s nice” from me.

Actually, out of those 3 things, FF7 being remastered (properly) is the most likely, one of them was obviously cancelled years ago and just hasn’t realised it yet, and one will inevitably disappoint everyone by turning out to be some sort of “free” to play mobile shenanigans. Possibly forklift racing.

    • It’ll be a surprise to you if you downplay the rumour with enough conviction.. ;)

  6. Ah shit. Just don’t, Square. You’ll mess it up and then you’ll have a very very angry fanbase and the FF fanbase can be a bit violent at times.

Just let it go and focus on making FF15 a good game. Also, stop with the remakes, PS4 and X1. Show us what you have instead of HD editions of HD games from the PS3 and X360.
