Recently we had one of the big game announcement’s of the year with Destiny 2 hitting the spotlight, and a lot of things were covered about the game. One of those issues was the status of the game servers with Bungie stating that there wouldn’t be dedicated servers. Turns out that isn’t quite the case, with the system being put in place mixing dedicated servers with peer to peer connectivity.
In a blog post on the Bungie site Matt Segur, the Engineering Lead for Destiny 2 cleared up a few things.
Destiny 2 uses a hybrid of client-server and peer-to-peer technology, just like Destiny 1. The server is authoritative over how the game progresses, and each player is authoritative over their own movement and abilities. This allows us to give players the feeling of immediacy in all their moving and shooting – no matter where they live and no matter whom they choose to play with.
This means in Destiny 2 players won’t have issues like host migration, and issues like players lagging around matches should be heavily reduced though there is no guarantee it will be gone completely. Essentially Destiny 2 should be a smoother experience that the original game. When it comes to potential cheaters Bungie has stated they have a number of strategies in place to make sure they are removed as quickly as possible.
