Happy Birthday PlayStation 3

The PS3 is now one year old (well, in the US at least) and to celebrate Sony have issued a smashing press release with loads of stats and a little mistake that perhaps they shouldn’t have mentioned, but we’ll come back to that. Firstly, total sales of the PS3 (Worldwide) is 5.6 million, and the PS3 is now outselling the Xbox 360 3:1 in Japan and Europe, with an expected installed base of 11 million by the end of March 2008.

In terms of Blu-ray, PS3 Blu-ray currently outsells Xbox 360 HD-DVD 9:1, and software titles are outselling HD DVD titles by almost 2:1, with over 450 Blu-ray movies available by Christmas. Sony also mentioned that the trend of porting to the PS3 from the 360 is now starting to reverse, with many developers building the game for the PlayStation first then porting to the 360 – “Ubisoft’s Haze is the first title to be created on PS3 and ported to Xbox” – which is the first time the game has been officially confirmed for other platforms, an odd choice of title to prove a point, but there you go.

So, happy birthday. All we need now is a special treat on the Store next week so we can all grab jellies and ice-cream.
