Paid PSN Subscriptions Arrive

Qore, the much hinted at PSN-based magazine has finally been revealed over at the official PlayStation Blog. What initially seems like a great idea soon gives way to feeling that this is just Sony’s way of charging for annual PSN usage, if you want all the content you can get your hands on. Let us explain:

‘Today we are announcing that Qore: Presented by the PLAYSTATION Network, a highly interactive, monthly lifestyle gaming program covering the world inside PLAYSTATION is on its way to PS3. Qore has been developed to give PS3 users early access to game related content at a level of quality, interactivity and depth’ says the press release. Good so far.

‘Everything is filmed in HD. Qore will feature exclusive news, developer interviews, in-depth game previews and behind-the-scenes looks at PlayStation games and special access to game demos, special beta invitations, game add-ons and other downloadable game-related content.’ Ah, you see – special access to game demos – looks like anyone wanting to get their hands on LittleBigPlanet, for example, will need to be a Qore subscriber. If they do something for Home they’ll be on to a winner.

Annual subscriptions cost $25, and there’s no word on whether this will be available outside the US. It’s a bold move from Sony, and until we see the quality of Qore we can’t make any judgement on value for money. Naturally we’re assuming the video sections will appear on Youtube, as these things do, but if your annual sub includes access to game betas then surely that’s not a bad deal at all.
