Kaz Hirai: PS3 Will Overtake 360

In the latest Official PlayStation Magazine, SCE chairman and everyone’s favourite silly soundbite man, Kaz Hirai has lashed out at Microsoft’s Xbox 360, claiming the console lacks longevity and that ultimately the PS3 will end up the victor this generation.  “It’s difficult to talk about Nintendo because we don’t look at their console as being competitors,” said Hirai. “They’re a different world and we operate in our world – that’s kind of the way I look at things.  And with the Xbox – again, I can’t come up with one word to fit. You need a word that describes something that lacks longevity.”

Or sales.  But whatever, at least he’s still clinging to that decade lifespan.  “Last time I checked,” he said, referring to Microsoft, “they’ve never had a console that’s been on the market for more than four or five years and we’ve committed to a ten year life cycle, so you do the math.”  Er, no, you.  How about you drop the price and start advertising the damned thing rather than just letting the PlayStation brand name do all the work, and failing.  “Unless things go really bad,” he concludes, “there’s no way that at the end of a life cycle our competition is going to have a higher install base.”

There aren’t sighs big enough.
