In this business, you will always come across die-hard fans. They will passionately, and annoyingly, reel off statistic after statistic about why their chosen brand is the best and why yours…[insert blabbering insult here]. So, before we go any further, can we please refrain from fanboyism and take this story as a bit of interesting news? Thanks.
Gameplan Insights from OTX, whilst speaking to Gamasutra, has revealed some interesting data regarding the SKUs of two of this year’s biggest releases and two of the most anticipated sequels within the gaming community; Assassin’s Creed 2 and Modern Warfare 2. It would appear that there is a large number of people who will be swapping from 360 to PS3 in order to play these new titles.
According to OTX’s data, 15% of those intending to buy Assassin’s Creed 2 for the PS3, own/owned the original on the 360. When you flip the statistic, only 7% of those who own/owned AC1 on PS3, will be swapping to 360. Modern Warfare 2 is a very similar story.
OTX analyst, Nick Williams, has predicted that this could become the norm, as the PS3 begins to attract more customers:
The PS3 seems poised to shift the ratio of Xbox 360 to PS3 sales for most major multi-platform releases in its favor among dual owners
Of course, the section of that quote that you need to take into account is the ‘dual owners’ part. It’s highly unlikely that those with one console will swap to another just for a single title.
The slim PS3 could be affecting this, but then again, Xbox’s are quite cheap nowadays too. But, what with Modern Warfare 2 predicted to make over $500 million in it’s first week of release, Sony will be welcoming the extra attention.
