US Sales Show 360 On Top

Last week we took a look at what Japan bought in February, this week it is America’s turn now that the NPD Group have released their sales data for the month.  In a reversal of last month’s US home console top two the 360 has beaten the Wii for only the second month.

US February Hardware Sales

  1. DS – 613,200
  2. 360 – 422,000
  3. Wii – 397,900
  4. PS3 – 360,100
  5. PSP – 133,400
  6. PS2 – 101,900

The 360 increased its sales almost by almost 90,000 compared to January leaving Microsoft’s Aaron Greenberg unable to contain his excitement at the figures:

Best February in Xbox 360 history: #1 in console sales with 422K sold – #1 & #3 spots in console SW w/ Bioshock2 and CODMW2

The 360 has benefited during February from both of its home console competitors suffering from supply problems.  Of the Wii, EEDAR analyst Jesse Divnich said

Our extensive retail channel checks have all indicated that, in fact, the Nintendo Wii is in short supply. We believe February numbers reflect entirely on the Wii being supply constrained and has little to do with declining demand of the product.

Regarding the PS3, SCEA’s Patrick Seybold warned in his statement following January’s NPD numbers that PS3 supply would be constrained for a few months.  Whether it is simply demand leading to the shortages or Sony being caught out as they transition to a new model we cannot say.

The shortage is real though with many gamers turning to forums to try to find somewhere with PS3s in stock.  The shortage has not just affected the US either as Sony UK have admitted to supply problems, stating that demand is “running over 20 per cent ahead of our expectations”.

Just as a point of interest before we leave you with the US software chart for last month here is February’s Japanese Media Create sales summed for the month with the handheld console variants grouped as they are in the NPD figures.
