Sony have announced a new Firmware Update for this week, on – yes – April 1st. I’ve been trying to keep the damned server afloat all weekend so hadn’t noticed this one, but apparently it’s real, and it’s not an April Fools.
The update, which is currently optional, removes the OtherOS function, the ability to run a Linux partition on your PS3. This, Sony tell us, is “due to security concerns”, presumably a certain individual’s recent hacking attempts, we’ll bet.
“Disabling the Other OS feature will help ensure that PS3 owners will continue to have access to the broad range of gaming and entertainment content from SCE,” say Sony.
They say it’s optional, but if you don’t update to 3.21, you won’t be able to make use of “new features and improvements that are available on PS3 system software 3.21 or later.” Not really optional, then, as far as I can see.
On a related (kinda) note, I’m moving TSA to a new server this morning, so expect (more) downtime.
