Star Trek: Online Boldly Going Nowhere

Console owning Trekkies might want to look away from the View Screen now. Confirming to Videogamer what we already thought was a given, Star Trek: Online is no longer a candidate for a console themed away party.

Joining the ranks of other red-shirt wearing titles such as Champions Online, Cryptic Studios will instead focus on their PC titles rather than make the console leap.

Producer Craig Zinkievich states:

“It’s something we can readily do in terms of technology. We’ve had it up and running on certain consoles, and had plans and designs in order to take advantage of those platforms. But as it stands right now it’s a little difficult to make that final leap on the business side of things. So, currently, just like Champions, the console version of Star Trek Online is on the back burner.”

Considering the possibility of Star Trek: Online reaching the outer regions of console-space was always dependent on the reception its PC version garnered (and it was received as well as a horny Cardasian at a Bajoran Memorial Service. In other words: well, but only by a select few), we’re chalking this one down as a failure of the prime directive: Only awesome PC games deserve to be ported to consoles. Failure to create an awesome PC game takes precedence over any and all other considerations, and carries with it the highest moral obligation not to inflict such a game upon unwary console owners.
