NieR Topples Mario In Japan

Nothing lasts forever it seems; not even a certain short, moustachioed handy-man’s perpetual grip on the Japanese gaming chart. Finally toppling the mighty New Super Mario Bros. from its lofty perch, Square Enix’s schizophrenic NieR is the new top dog in its native land.

We mention the split personality nature of the title as, though NieR: Replicant (which features a younger protagonist and is in Japanese) is numero uno in the Land of the Rising Sun, its 360 exclusive stable-mate (NieR: Gestalt, the version the rest of us got outside of Japan and is completely in English) failed to make the top ten.

Here’s the full rundown. No, we’re not sure what Elder Scrolls is doing at #8 either.

  • 1. NieR Replicant (Square Enix, PS3)
  • 2. New Super Mario Bros. Wii (Nintendo, Wii)
  • 3. Tokyo Mono Hara Shi: Karasu No Mori Gakuen Kitan (Atlus, PSP)
  • 4. Ys Oath in Felghana (Falcom, PSP)
  • 5. Friend Collection (Nintendo, DS)
  • 6. Wii Fit Plus (Nintendo, Wii)
  • 7. Pro Baseball Spirits 2010 (Konami, PSP)
  • 8. The Elder Scrolls IV Oblivion Game of the Year Edition (Bethesda, PS3)
  • 9. Pokemon Ranger Path of Light (Pokemon, DS)
  • 10. Mario Kart Wii (Nintendo, Wii)
