Rumour: Ancel Has Left Ubisoft

Got salt? Here we go. According to a source “close” to Ubisoft Montpellier, Beyond Good & Evil maestro Michel Ancel has parted ways with the company. If true, his departure is understood to be the final nail in the coffin of Beyond Good & Evil’s troubled and perpetually delayed sequel.

It’s common knowledge that Ancel’s relationship with Ubisoft has been somewhat complex. Despite cult status and strong critical acclaim, the first Beyond Good & Evil failed to shift as many units as the publisher had expected. The sequel, of which leaked footage has appeared on the web at least twice, suggested Ancel was not budging on his particular style; a stance some thought goes someway in explaining why the project was continuously in and out of development.

Apparently Ancel will open his own studio and concentrate on “more traditional” 2D games.
