Oh look, it’s the start of E3 week so we’re all up way past midnight reporting on stuff as it filters out from Los Angeles. Well, in this case it’s filtering out of USA Today via GAF.
Crysis 2, the sequel to what is still considered by many to be the most beautiful PC game yet created, is going 3D. Not old-fashioned 3D (which we’re going to have to find a new name for – I suggest “polygonal”) but newfangled, eye-strainingly deep 3D. This is a big push for Sony at this year’s Expo but it seems that the big black monster won’t be alone in getting some extra dimensional augmentation. The USA Today piece says that Crysis 2 is promising to be the first major game available in 3D on all three HD platforms.
The article also mentions the advancement of social networking tools within games so soon we might be seeing tweets that inform us when someone has started playing Crysis 2, in how many dimensions they’re viewing it and whether or not they’re using a proper controller or waving their arms about in front of “Kinect”. Whoop, I can’t wait.

Meh. Don’t care for 3D.
I hope Sony aren’t going to keep banging on about it in their presentation.
colossalblue
oh, they will.
I share your (lack of) enthusiasm but Sony are going crazy for it and a lot of publishers think that Avatar’s (movie) revenue indicates that people want 3D bobbins and are willing to part with shedloads of cash for it.
Foxhound_Solid
I am looking forward to getting involved with 3D.
Dead Space 2 in 3D, I cannot wait to see how good it looks and i may well just be in…..

I think people will gradually come around to the idea of 3D in a couple of years when 3D will be standard on most TVs. I mean, why would you not use it if it was right there built in to your new Tv?
bajere
They will, and i cant wait! 3D sounds great!
“3D on all three HD platforms” Is that PS3, PC and 360?? I didnt think you could do 3D unless it had HDMI(or the PC connection that i cant remember) output? And as not all 360’s had HDMI’s i thought MS wouldn’t push it?

Oh how the world has changed, why do we have to have people leaking stuff.
All members of staff that get images should have that member of staffs name on so then if the image leaks the company know who to blame, and we get less leaks, and are more likely to hear the news the way the developer intended.
It’s getting to the stage where these events collapse after all the major news gets leaked a week or so beforehand.
samiro05
That’s all very well and yes they shouldn’t be spoiling the surprise. But isn’t it sites like these and more that go looking for and reporting on these leaks and therefore trying to find spoilers to what everyone would eventually see?
It’s like knowing what you’re getting for your birthday or Christmas, if you celebrate it.
Anyhoo, I’ve not included myself in any 3D experiences (I mean gaming or movies, I’m not a stick drawing) since being in disneyland paris watching ‘Honey I Shrunk The Audience’. This doesn’t mean I’m not interested though as I really can’t wait to play my first 3D game. This could be it.

Agreed. It’s nothing personal against TSA but TSA will feel like they’ve fallen behind if they don’t report on such titbits. I’d be happy for an E3 blackout for the preceding weeks but it’s never the case. Patents are files, URLs are registered, Linked In pages are updated. There really seems no hiding place for the investigative journalist.
gurglesletch
Cool, but i won’t be in the 3D market for years due to price.

its all down to timimg of your purchace of old set. I got HD years ago, ill be wanting a new set next year, so ill get a 3D one. You will find a natural install of 3D TVs around the world over the next year, people who have no interst in 3D will still get them as the will be the only TV’s availible. Bit like people now with HDTVs watching Eastenders every night in SD, they have no intention of geting SkyHD, yet still have an HD set as its the only ones you can buy. 3D tech is not far from HD tech, so the cost is not big enough to warrent keeping 3D and HD sets on sale sepreate.

Exactly, I got a 3D set years ago, and if I had any money I wouldn’t feel bad about replacing it now. I pity the people who just bought a HD set for the first time to watch the World Cup in HD, it’ll be ages before they can feel they can upgrade without feeling like they’ve wasted their money.

If Crysis 2 isn’t being released ’til sometime next year, that might be a good time to upgrade to 3D.

i aint wearin no glasses foolz!

After seeing the resolution-hit that a game like SuperStarDust took for 3D I’m genuinely concerned with the likes of Crysis 2. I’m assuming the whole game will have to be in black and white or seen only every other second, to allow for the extra horsepower required.
retro_
Aha, not any more. SSD 3D is now 3D in FULL 1080p and when i mean FULL 1080p i mean FULL 1080p. 2D SSD 3D WASN’T FULL 1080p when it was 1080p….and now it is ;)
cc_star
Except its now 720p, and effectively half the framerate

Can someone explain to me how the Xbox 360 does ‘real’ 3D? From what I can gather ‘real’ 3D needs the extra bandwidth that only HDMI 1.3a (the PS3’s connection) and HDMI 1.4 (the new 3DTV connection) can provide. As far as I was aware the 360 only has the lower-bandwidth HDMI 1.2, indeed the first 360’s (if there are any working ones left) didn’t even come with HDMI!
So how can the 360 process a true 3D image to the 3DTV? Is it some other type of 3D? Or a compromised, interpolated version of 3D? From a tech perspective only the PS3 should be compatible with the new 3D standard, so I’m curious what workaround the 360 uses…
bajere
same here. im confused on the 360 situation. also, if the graphics take a hit on the PS3 due to lack of horse power to run 3D, then how is the 360 going to manage?
cc_star
The 360’s horsepower is more immediately accessible, that why most of the multiplatform games run either at a higher resolution, higher framerate or both than the PS3.
the bottleneck will be in the 360’s older implementation of HDMI.
I think they’ll confuse the issue by releasing cardboard glasses 3D, thus shining a gimmicky light on 3D endangering it getting a foothold in gaming
Deathbrin
“Polygonal”, with all it’s good-name-ness, won’t do. Won’t fit voxel games and sprite-based ones like Duke Nukem 3D.
Supertaxman
I’m really not surprised by this – Crytek are always at the forefront of new technologies.
