If you have read our Sony Conference round up, you will have seen that after months of speculation, PlayStation Plus was launched as the PS3’s premium online service.
We first dug out the PlayStation Plus branding in March, but yesterday was the first time it was all pulled together and revealed officially, and as promised, PlayStation Plus will sit on top of and not replace the current PlayStation Network service at the end of June.
But what about details? Well, the EU Blog has been rather kind and confirmed European dates: PlayStation Plus kicks off at the end of this month, on the 29th. So what’s PlayStation Plus all about?
Games.
PlayStation Plus members will be able to get their hands on at least four free games every single month, these will be at least one PSN game, two Minis and one PSOne Classic. In the US, the first month’s content includes the excellent Fieldrunners, Age of Zombies, the entirety of wipEout HD and a PSOne Classic.
Full Game Trials.
These aren’t your average demos, no, this is full unrestricted access to full PSN and Blu-ray games. You can download the full game, and play it any way you want just as if you owned it – for up to an hour – potentially saving a fortune in purchasing games you just don’t get on with.
All it requires is a download of the content and away you go, although it is not confirmed which games you will initially be able to try out.
Automatic Downloads.
PlayStation Plus members will be able to set a time on their PS3 for it to wake up and download any available firmware updates, patches and demos, as we’ve said in the past, meaning they’ll never have to wait again. You set the time and date for your PS3 to download a demo, for example, it will turn itself on and by the time you’re home from a hard day at work the process should be complete.
Discounts, Demos And Betas.
Members will be entitled to exclusive discounts for a whole range of games and content, get early access to demos (hopefully in-line with Live Gold subscribers) and exclusive early beta access. Members will also be entitled to a range of free and sometimes exclusive Avatars and dynamic themes.
If you’re wondering how much all these benefits are going to cost you then it’s €14.99 / £11.99 for 90 days and €49.99 / £39.99 for a whole year, and if you choose to sign up between 29th June and August 3rd then Sony are giving away a downloadable copy of LittleBigPlanet.
Consider me signed up.

Some really great ideas here and i like the way its not upsetting the gamers that are happy with the free set up, great move sony and im in!

Yeah, if all I’m missing out on by delaying my sign up is a free copy of LBP then I’m not too fussed. I’m sure I’ll get it some point down the line but not right now.
Topov81
Does the 90 day subscription qualify for LBP or is it only the full year?
ruinereraser
full year only
Origami Killer
Sign me up straight away for the full year, LBP i dont have it so thats gd for me :)
Origami Killer
Also im gonna need a bigger hardrive :) only have 16 gb left
can u but hardrives which u can connect by usb to ps3??
DeathByNumbers
You can connect a suitably formatted (fat32) USB hdd to your ps3 but you can’t save game data and PSN downloads to it unfortunately. It would mainly be for music, photos, movies and backing up.
Origami Killer
Im screwed then :) may have to delete a few things

Isn’t the PSP version of LBP they are giving away, at least that was the one that got linked on the EU blog….about as useful as a porn star in a convent if you don’t own PSP like me, unless you can sell the code.
Some guy said earlier about people who are likely to spend 40 quid a year will already have wipeout and many PSN games which is true. I guess they taking a leaf out of skys book where they don’t give a flying duck about their bread and butter customers but will bend over backwards to attract new custom.

I reckon the content will vary for each location (just to give everyone something new to b!tch about.
Origami Killer
I have never bought minis, ps1, or psn games so im getting my moneys worth
Marfje123
No, it’s the PS3 version.

Just over £3 a month with access to an extra 4 games a month. That’s enough to sell it to me. The discounts will be useful too.
As you pay for it from the store I’ll be able to pay using my discounted PSN cards too. I reckon it would end up costing me about £2.65 a month using them. That’s about the price of most minis.
I wonder if all these features will be available for the PSP if you have PSPlus

Okay I’m signing up!!

It’s a shame Plus doesn’t come with some sort of PS3 insurance included like Continuous Play which was hinted at a while back. With the insurance, it would have been a definite purchase for me, but without it, I’ll wait for all specific details to be released before I decide.
DrNate86
That says in the US they get Fieldrunners, Age of Zombies and Wipeout, any news on EU free games?
TSBonyman
Does anyone not have this game already ..sheesh.
ruinereraser
Apparently, almost 30 million PlayStation owners ;)
