Microsoft Confirm Kinect Price

Gamestop might have already spoiled the fun by leaking Kinect’s price, but the amount that we’re really going to like has been revealed – it’s $150.

Officially put on the Microsoft Store overnight, Kinect’s $150 price point puts it way above the cost of a single $50 Move controller (and $30 subcontroller) but, of course, Kinect can support more than one player for that price.

“Kinect brings games and entertainment to life in extraordinary new ways,” says the product page, re-iterating the fact that there is “no controller required”.

Sceptics, especially hardcore gamers, remain unconvinced that Kinect is the way forward for the Xbox 360 and despite Microsoft’s family friendly approach I’d imagine the price point puts it outside a casual impulse buy.

Microsoft originally said that the price for Kinect would be revealed at Gamescom, so expect UK pricing then.

  1. Well, at the moment I’m planning on picking up 2 move controllers and seeing how the DS3 works as a sub-controller. Looks like I’ll spend less money this way than if I were a 360 owner so I’m pretty happy!

  2. I wonder how many games require you to have 2 Move controllers but no Sub. I think I’ll first buy 2 Moves and see if I can survive with my 2 regular controllers.

  3. I’ve a question for the tech-savvy members of TSA.
Is the PS Eye capable of detecting hand gestures & voice commands in the same way as kinect? If so, couldn’t Sony sneakily add such features in with a firmware update, negating kinect’s remaining unique-selling-point?
Not that I want to be saying ‘ps3 off’ etc. but holding up the peace hand-gesture for pause etc might be cool.

  4. and i thought sony were bad with prices

  5. This article has cheered me up after the PS+ thingy.

  6. I’d long maintained that both Move and “Kinect”(Natal wasn’t great, but it was much better a name than that) will bomb out once they hit retail, but with such a ridiculous price point(That’ll translate to £120 here, just watch), questions as to whether it actually performs as promised, and oh yes… no games that aren’t godawful shovelware keep fit dance a thons, I’d honestly be prepared to bet real money on Kinect dying off into obscurity pretty fast. Even if it enjoys early success when the fanboys line up for day one buys, the price is simply too close to the price you can pick up a Wii for for the casual crowd to take any notice. Can you imagine what software sales will be like for it too? Oh boy…

As for the Move, it’ll likely hit the skids first, as Sony probably won’t pour too much into it ‘just in case’, but I will give them that getting Dead Space Extraction on Move was a masterstroke, as that games kicked ALL kinds of ass on Wii. Won’t save it though…

  7. i own both consoles, i already own a playstation eye (bought off ebay for 4 quid purely for gt5 head tracking) so ill probably buy a move controler to give it ago, and can pritty much say im not at all intrested in kinect but will no doubt wait on reviews etc

  8. I’ll buy 2 Move controlers, and maybe 1 sub. I think that’s all that’s really required. The DS3 controler is pretty much a sub anyway, of which I have 4. Can’t wait to try it out.
