More PSP 2 Rumours

Does the PSP 2 exist? Has anybody seen it? Is it just a load of guff stirred up by rumour mongerers on the Internet? Just what is the secret of the Black Magic box? All these questions* will be answered in the future but for now we’re stuck in the present. Well we were, it’s just gone, it’s now a ‘new’ present. Now that’s gone as well, read quicker will you or else we will never get to the end of the news item.

The latest gossip comes from The Wall Street Journal no less where an article regarding 3G connections states the following:

“Sony is developing a portable device that shares characteristics of hand-held game machines, e-book readers and netbook computers, according to people familiar with the matter.”

That does sound an awful lot like previous PSP 2 rumours in that it will be a full multimedia device rather than just a games console. Of course they may also be referring to a new tablet device rather than the PSP 2, I guess we shall just have to wait until the future arrives.

* Apart from the secret of the Black Magic box. No one will ever know that.

  1. PDA ?
I think they may be bridging the gap between Vaio, PSP and Aino to create an iPhone/iPad competitor. Makes sense.

    • I’m thinking the same, and if so could it mean apps, ebooks etc on the store?

      • The problem is with making something like an iPad, is that, its NOT and iPad. The sole reason iPhones and iPads are a success (apart from the style, i guess) is the app store. You pick up a Nokia an look at the ‘app’ store, its cack. I have been given a HTC Google mobile for a few months, and the app store on that is alot better, but still no where close to Apple app store.

The problem is with app stores, and peoples need for them, is that each store needs the app to be coded differently. We built an iPhone app at work, was hard, and Android is meant to be the same difficulty. So if you add the Symbion and a Sony dev kit to that, it just makes to much work for the dev’s. I think Nokia are switching over to Android soon as well, so i think its the way to go. Apple and Android App’s will be the only thing getting dev time, so any other store (The Sony app store for example) will die on its ass IMO

      • The app stores aren’t as important. The reason for all the iPhone apps is because the browser is incapable of handling flash, etc. Android’s browser is capable(i’m on my HTC right now and I’ve had an iPhone). That is why I prefer Android.

      • The reason for the iPhone Apps is that its a gold rush, with millions of phones being sold all the time & the lure of making a successful App & the riches it brings too much to resist.

The App Store isn’t needed because of the lack of Flash, but the potential financial rewards for Apple or an App Developer, take a look at http://www.apple.com/webapps/ to see whats possible in either HTML5, JavaScript or both without the need for Flash.

      • “The reason for all the iPhone apps is because the browser is incapable of handling flash, etc”

One thing has nothing to do with the other. By that argument, Andriod phones wouldn’t need apps because they have flash.

  2. Christ do they even make Black Magic any more? I vaguely remember them when I was young.

  3. Interesting…

  4. New Clié?

  5. A PDA/Tablet device would be perfect in the current market environment.

Other recent rumors suggest that Sony and Google are looking at some sort of joint venture.

Imagine a PSP2 that kind of looks like a Ipad but is backed by android and uses an XMB.

  6. I thought this was Sony’s/ Google’s answer to the ipad!

    • Certainly sounds like it – they could merge the playstation brand into it though. I wonder what operating system it would run?

  7. It’ll have to be incredible to compete in a market place that looks like it’s gonna become crowded very quickly.

  8. They did admit not long ago that they were taking a new go at a phone/psp device.. it might for that device..

    • I expect everything you can imagine is being considered in R&D though at a huge company like Sony.

  9. PSP2 it only does everything.

  10. What a stupid idea the PSP2 should just be a graphical upgrade to the original with alot of cool features. Much like the 3DS

    Sick of these rumours

    • That’s not really a PSP2 then, in the same way the 3DS isn’t quite a DS2. That’d be more a PSP-4000

      • Not really. The PSP 2000 and 3000 didn’t have a graphical upgrade over the PSP 1000. As with any new console, one of the biggest improvements over the previous is the graphical capabilities, along with a lot of cool new features.

I personally hope that the the PSP 2 doesn’t have a phone. WOuld really hate to be in the middle of an intense fire fight and have it interupted by “Incoming Call: Mommy’s Cell”.

All i want from a PSP 2 is better graphics, dual analog sticks and MAYBE a touch screen. Some sort of tilt functionality could be nice as well.

And I think the 3DS is very much a DS2. It has way better graphical capabilities. I’m assuming it will play a new media type, but might still support DS games as the original DS did with game boy advance games. They are talking about having proper online functionality, something that the current DSi does not have. It sound like an improvement in just about every way.

    • I disagree. I think gameplay is far more important than graphics on a portable device, and that’s something that were beginning to see at the moment – especially with the minis.
