Future Firmware Update Details

As we all know, 3D is coming to the PlayStation 3 in two phases; first was the gaming 3D update which arrived with the 3.30 firmware update at the end of April, and secondly there is another firmware update to enable 3D Blu-ray movie playback coming in September.

News that the release window of this update has narrowed from ‘fall’ to September is currently doing the rounds in InternetLand, but of course we knew this already as we brought you the news of this narrowed release window about a month ago.

In addition to the narrowed release window, Pocket-Lint are reporting that there will be a third 3D related firmware update for the PlayStation 3, which will bring 3D photos to the platform. Following on from Sony’s release of 3D capable Cybershot cameras, it’s obviously important that these files are viewable on a 3D display, and this is where Sony’s good ole trojan horse the PS3 comes in… and you thought it was a games console.

They go on to report that Mick Hocking, an SCEE director, said “We think games are going to be the killer content for 3D. In general, we find that 3D enhances all types of games. There are no types that it doesn’t bring a benefit to. We think the games this year are going to do the same [as Avatar did for movies] for the gaming community.”

Although 3D has its sceptics, anyone who’s actually had hands-on time with 3D gaming seems to be unanimous in heaping praise on the format as being nothing less than spectacular and must be seen to be believed. Meaning, I can’t wait to get on board, just as soon as I’ve saved up some pennies.

  2. Oh 3d, just go away.
I cant judge 3d gaming having not experienced it yet so just so you know I form my opinion solely on 3d films, so if 3D gaming is anything like 3d movies….its gonna be crap.
I thought Avatar was much better in 2d on my 32″ screen at home than in 3d at on a cinema screen. 3D does the opposite of what its supposed to for me. It removes the immersion by trying to force you to more immersed in the film. It forces the special effects right into your face saying “Look at me I’m a great special effect…look, look, look how good of an effect I am…I am awesome…love me…please”

  3. i tried 3D at the eurogamer expo in Leeds last year on batman arkham asylum. the 3D was brilliant, it was just a pity that it had to be with such a bad game…

    • Arkham Asylum a bad game???

Consider yourself struck off my Christmas card list!

      :P

  4. Trying to save up for a 3D Panasonic by the end of the summer but it isn’t going too well, €2500 is a lot.

    • why don’t you just win the lottery, then you can have all the 3D tvs you want. actually you’ll probably still only be able to buy around 5 :)

  5. I still haven’t even got a HD TV. Have no need for a 3D TV, so when this CRT TV gives up the ghost I will be getting a HD one.

  6. Going on SSHD3D, it’s a hell of a lot harder to judge meteor distance when flicking it into 2D using the TV(left image only) or the game, it does help judge distances a lot easier, will be good to aim for apexes in GT5.
I’m enjoying it, and if you can get into a shop with a PS3 with games being demoed it’s well worth a look, still waiting for a bit more content though, but given time, there are no big releases for a little while.

  7. Watched a demo of a 3D game on a tv recently.
The depth and expanded stage was there but you can’t concentrate on what you are doing. Too much going on the screen with games – movies I can get and see, but I think we are long way off before 3D gaming is the killer platform everybody is claiming

  8. i heard ps3 is capable of 4d. now why cant we have some of that rather than the old 3d wish wash and glasses. reminds me of watching jaws 3d at the cinema.. so 80s. so gay.. except the glasses these days are a hundred sheets instead of free cardboard. whos up for the cardboard version??? xD

  9. lol all these 3d updates and absolutely no way that I can play games, watch films or view photos in 3d, £400 month just does not go very fair (and yeah I am applying to every job I can lol)
