Many people are waiting with bated breath for this one. GT5 still has no confirmed European release date (although close to the US date of Nov 2 is a reasonable assumption) and Forza 4 seems to be a Kinect-powered car showroom at the minute so car-lovers are hoping for the best.
Black Bean Games are announcing today that the first officially licenced WRC game for five years will be released on October 8th. The game will feature 78 different rally stages and over 550km of road as well as a career mode and the ubiquitous multiplayer options. It is available for home consoles and PC but surely that date is an attempt to get a month of PS3 sales before Polyphony Digital’s long-awaited masterpiece lands on store shelves.
More info is available on the game’s official website but here are a few screens to whet your appetite.

I loved the WRC games on PS2 but I’ve never really understood why it’s been so long since the last one. Shame Evolution Studios aren’t involved anymore. At least Black bean have a race game history, that bodes well.

Ditto, I spent many an hour on WRC II Extreme. The screenshots look enticing so will keep an eye out for this nearer the time

Black Bean usually do a good job with racing games.

Those screens look much better . The trees in particular looked liked something from ps2 in the teaser footage i saw recently which was a bit worrying.

There’s a ‘making of’ video here.

Every road surface (in those screenshots) are as flat as a witch’s boobie! That doesn’t bode well. The very thing that looks great with rallying is the constant fight the driver has with the surface as well as the surroundings. Still… might be good fun. I just wish we had something as lovely as V-Rally. Light-hearted and awesome crashes! (split screen too).

I love the sport and love the games, i can`t wait for this!

we have been spoiled by GT5 screens for so long, this look very poor. Might look better closer to release though

I remember playing the WRC games on the PS2, I was amazed by the damage! Just kept on crashing over and over again to see broken windows and crumpled doors! This one should be great although, GT5 will have rally stages and cars so this will have a lot of competition!
bunimomike
Just out of interest, does GT5 now include full crashes (eg. tumbling down the road, rolling over, etc). If not, it’ll never be a true rally experience.
gazzagb
Yes, but full damage is only for ‘premium’ cars or something. I think its 100/200 cars have full damage, while the rest will just have exterior damage. The rallying in previous GT games has been really good.

But is the damage in GT5 only visual or will it also affect the handling/performance of the car? If only cosmetic then I dont see the point TBH.
My worry for this game is it being rushed out to beat GT5 and being constantly patched for the first month (like NFS Shift was).

WRC is one of the main reason’s why I’m getting GT5. If this game turns out to be good I might give it a try.

Hmm… I think I’ll pass, GT5 and NFS Pursuit of Hottness remains the chosen ones for my money and for me.
BadBoyBoogie
I really enjoyed the first couple of WRC games in the series, but I hope this version isn’t being rushed out just to grab a few extra sales before GT5 is released.

Buying this day one. Go Kimi!!! :

Where’s the fun in driving just Ford Focus’ and Citroen C4’s? As thats all there is in WRC these days, hence why its a pretty boring sport to watch now! Long gone are the epic driver title clashes with more manufacturers that you could shake a stick at (well more than 2)!
