Earlier today we reported that Robert Bowling had tweeted that ‘no such plan exists for this or any other Call of Duty (including the upcoming Black Ops)’. This was in response to a video that claimed to show some sort of payment system to play Modern Warfare 2. The person responsible for this video was last seen calling the fire brigade due an emerging blaze in the trouser area.
Following this the Black Ops team have waded in and Treyarch’s Josh Olin has added via Twitter: “No, you will not have to ‘Pay to Play’ Call of Duty: Black Ops multi player either. Rumor -> Squashed.”
Just in case there is any doubt, Activision’s Dan Amrich has posted a note on his blog that there is “not a secret portal to some nefarious plot to charge people for COD multi player — and there are no plans to do that”. So just to be absolutely, 100% clear, Activision will not be making you pay to play online for Modern Warfare 2 or Black Ops.

“but you will have to pay extra for sound, visuals, more than two mp maps and to enable your controller in sp”…

LoL. It reminds me of that Chris Rock joke that said something to the effect of that if they charged $5000 for a bullet therre would be no more innocent bystanders.
Maybe If everytime you fired a grenade from launcher in excess of the two you get when you spawn you get charged $£€¥’s for it that might finally stop the explosive rain :D
On a serious note, I don’t support the idea of charging for playing CoD and I don’t care who uses what in MW2, it’s when it gets abused that thoughts like I mentioned above slip into my mind.

Oh good, glad to hear about that, straight from Activision…it must be true…just like we were not going to get Twisted Metal on the PS3
Tuffcub
I have no idea what you are implying.
bajere
haha, dont worry, im just saying dont read too much into these statments on twitter ect. it was only a month or so ago we were all talking about how much of a shame Twisted Metal wasn’t coming to the PS3 due to a twitter ‘announced’.
Maybe this story is true, but with the noises Kotick makes about COD and money, i wouldn’t hold my breath.

I don’t think either sony or ms would allow it anyway so i think this whole thing is a load of nonsense.
bajere
i think they would, a few online MMO’s have been talked about for consoles, im guessing they will have charges. i dont think there is anything wrong with charging IMO. if they sold MW3 for £5 then charged £20 for 6 months for a good, low lag services, i would say thats fair. if they charge £40+ and then ask for subscription money i think thats way to harsh
tonycawley
There’s a big difference though between mmo – a huge world with almost infinite possibilities of things to do – and cod. Mmo’s are constantly under development even after release, with new quests etc being added and the world expanding. The most you’re going to get out of cod is a couple of extra maps and weapons. I seriously don’t think either sony or ms would allow it. Besides, aren’t the mmos that’ve been discussed mainly first party?
Foxhound_Solid
Make the COD Addicts pay lol.
Kotick has got the world and his dog hooked on the game, he will have you all paying through the nose soon…
I can see it now, worlds first COD Rehab is about 12 months off…..
Ha Ha – speculative rant over…
I reckon it will still happen, thankfully Im not that into COD, apart from WAW campaign which is coolio…

Are you kidding me? The world at war platinum was the most frustrating trophy ever. Veteran mode was a joke. Grenade fest. 12 deadly accurate grenades land at your feet from 12 miles off as soon as you take cover, so you pop your head up to leg it and get shot from 27 miles away turning the screen stupid red. Worst ai i’ve ever seen in any game, they made it harder in the shittest of ways.
Foxhound_Solid
As I said ‘thankfully im not that into COD’
Killzone and Resistance are my Fave FPS franchises….
Although I loved Timesplitters…

I second that, that Heart of the Reich level towards the end was an absolute nightmare, took me 3 solid hours play just to get all 4 AA guns blown up. It was as though whenever you took cover to regenerate from a bullet graze someone would come out of nowhere and empty a bucket of grenades next to your feet. Although now whenever I come up against a tough looking trophy I just remember that day and think if I can do that level I can do anything ;) I’m all for a challenge but that was ridiculous.

But if I want to play cod online I’d have to pay £40 a year on 360, so in theory cod IS pay to play.
MiguelX69
Seeing things from your point of view, you would have to pay to play every single game online. And yes, on 360 you do that, but you get something of a better service for it. While on the PS3 the payment is opcional (talking about Plus), it gives free games rather than better online services, that because you can’t make free players have bad online and premium players have better online. That’s why in 360 there are the ones who play online and the ones who don’t.
Furthermore, and now talking about CoD itself, I think that the “paid service” or whatever showed up in that 360 version of Modern Warfare 2 might have been a test version running somehere… Testing online paying services, for a future Call of Duty MMO.

i wait until this words come out of bobby koticks mouth, but i already know they won’t.
but the words we will hear are: “new experience”

Has Activision made any public statement on the subject? I find it odd that activision hasn’t put an end to this rumour. I realize that everybody at IW is too busy tweeting their lawyers to reply but why has treyarch made all the statements, when it’s the responsibility of the publisher to address things like this. Until Activision makes an official announcement mostly everybody is going to believe that a subscription based CoD is just “naturally” going to happen regardless of what anybody else says.
wonkey-willy
yet another reason to boycott any call of duty game.
screw you infinity ward, activision and treyarch.
bloodsucking leeches.
