MotorStorm Apocalypse News

A live chat session with Evolution Studios has just finished on the EU blog and has revealed some tasty treats of news. The first bit of news is that MotorStorm was almost called something else…

Matt Southern: We went through a *lot* of names before getting MotorStorm. ‘Stampede’ and ‘Wasted’ were two front-runners for some time, and I remember being asked what I thought of ‘Grit’. I can’t repeat my answer.

They were then asked about the ‘mode creator’ which will allow you to design and share your own game modes…

Paul Rustchynsky: The custom mode creator is a very simple icon based interface which allows players to string together various actions and reactions. We’re using the very tool that the users will have on the disc to create the multitude of game modes that are initially available. So hopefully the community will be able to surprise us with their creations, or even embarrass us by creating better modes than we did.

Next came news of five brand new vehicle classes which are:

  • Superbike – Super agile bike which is great on the tarmac but struggles off road.
  • Chopper – Low riding bike which has bags of power but is the most difficult bike to handle.
  • Hot Hatch – A first for the series, a Front Wheel Drive (FWD) vehicle that is super nimble but its low riding height makes it tricky to drive off-road.
  • Supercar – Fast & grippy but you need to keep this car on the tarmac whenever possible.
  • Muscle Car – Probably the most technical (and fun) vehicle to drive, you need to be really gentle on the throttle to avoid the rear end spinning out.

Big news for fans of MotorStorm is the introduction of a perks system. The team could not go in to much detail but said the perks fall in to three broad categories:

  • Boost Perks – Will affect the power, duration, cooling and influence of external factors.
  • Handling – Will affect the top speed, acceleration, grip, steering rates, etc.
  • Combat – Will improve vehicle durability, rams, and a few other things which cannot be detailed just yet.

News of the soundtrack has emerged including – yes – custom soundtracks whilst playing on and offline. As for the music in the game..

Matt Southern: It’s very early days in terms of who is involved but Lalo Schifrin, the legendary Hollywood composer (Bullitt, Enter the Dragon, Rush Hour, Dirty Harry, Mission Impossible) is signed up to compose original music for us, which we are then going to hand to some of the best remix artists in the world to create an entire soundtrack.

The team also said the landscape destruction feature from the single player game will feature in the online modes and ‘the destruction won’t always occur in the same way.’

In his final comment Matt Southern revealed that there will be cut scenes instead of loading screens “each one reveals a little about what it’s like to be a part of MotorStorm.” The cut scenes are being developed with comic artist Jonboy Meyers, you can see some of his work in the gallery below.

  1. Dude knows how to draw boobs.

    • Woah, Lalo Schifrin?! Really? A pleasant surprise.

      • Right, didn’t mean to reply to your comment Person, just the article in general!

  2. anybody else thought that this game looks like playing the best bit of the movie 2012?
    because i have. :)

    • You mean the bit where they’re driving in the limo? If so then I hope it’s like that (and not like the rest of 2012…)

      • yeah that’s the bit, where california is sinking into the ocean, definitely the best bit of the whole film.
i enjoyed the film but that was definitely the best bit.

roland emmerich sure like destroying stuff, he blew up the whitehouse, he had a giant lizard wreck new york, then he flooded and froze it, and to top it all off he sinks california into the sea.
and they say bay is all about explosions
        well, i like explosions.
anyway, you can see what i mean from the video, about how the game reminds you of that scene.

  3. Motorstorm Grit. Good thing they dropped that one, would invite too many comparisons with Colin McRae Dirt.

    • No, Grit would of been the name instead of MotorStorm so it would by Grit: Apocalype!

      • Stampede Apocalypse sounds like an FPS in a zombie-infested abbatoir.

    • that and grit rimes with shit

      • I had a shit apocalypse once. caused by a bad curry the night before.

  4. Awesome, Lalo Schifrin is the man … kinda disappointed they’re gonna remix his work though. I’d much rather have original versions of whatever he comes up with (or at least as well as the remixes).

  5. Perks.. Well there goes my purchase, I’m not playing a racing game where some people are better off because of some stupid perks..

    • I think it just means you can have it so your car handles better. Don’t think they mean you have to do well to get them. Well I hope not anyway.

      • If its just like choosing between two different cars, so that they’re not all the same. I could get on board with that, but it sounds like unlocks, which I don’t like. I hope you’re right, when you say it like that it does make more sense..

  6. Perks?! Its a racing game, it should be about skill, not perks.

    • i wouldnt worry about that, therye not goign to be like the stupid mw2 perks eg like unlimited boost, they would surely relise it, they will be preobably be parks wich aid your stlye of racing.

  7. no way in hell am i playing online if it has perks

  8. Can’t wait, sounds good! :)

  9. Customs soundtracks!
