New Def Jam Rapstar Artists

Konami and 4mm Games have today issued a few more details about Def Jam Rapstar. They’ve confirmed some new tracks (below) and a couple of producers who are contrubuting new beats for the game’s freestyle mode. News that Danja (who worked a lot with Timbaland) and Nitti Beats (slightly less well-known but does a lot southern-sounding, electronic beats) have joined the roster of world-famous producers is very welcome indeed.

Other producers involved include Cool & Dre, DJ Khalil and Just Blaze so the freestyle mode – which gives you the chance to spit rhyme and upload it for the world to see – is looking like an extremely tempting prospect for would-be emcees. The game is set to allow video recording via your console’s camera and uploading to the integrated website where we can all go and see your performances.

Regular readers will know of my general dislike for so-called “music games” but Rapstar has genuinely piqued my interest in a way that the guitar-based games (I don’t generally think that tapping a button to on-screen prompts counts as “gameplay”) and karaoke games (keep your singing to the shower, please) never have. Def Jam Rapstar seems to have its focus squarely on the Hip Hop crowd and that focus, coupled with their clear knowledge of the target audience, might just result in a “music game” I play.

Bear in mind though, I’m white and quickly approaching thirty. My freestyling might be the most cringe-worthy thing imaginable. Let’s hope those uploads can be filtered, eh?

Those newly announced tracks:

  • It’s All About The Benjamins (Remix) – Diddy (Feat. The Notorious B.I.G., Lil’ Kim & The Lox)
  • You’re All I Need/I’ll Be There For You – Method Man (Feat. Mary J. Blige)
  • Hate Me Now – Nas (Feat. Diddy)
  • Hot In Herre – Nelly
  • Fight The Power – Public Enemy
  • 50/50 – Wiley

Those tracks seem spot on for what I’d want from a game about rapping but it will be very interesting to see if they opt for radio edits of the songs to allow a lower age rating and sell more or if they go for the full on “explicit” versions. I know I couldn’t live with the censored versions but I also know large swathes of the populace wouldn’t allow their teen kids to sing along with some of the potty-mouths on MTV Base. It will also be very interesting to see how they moderate “the N-word” in the uploaded videos.

  1. Hopefully they will let you choose in the options menu whether or not you want the censored version. I for one would like to have the explicit version of songs as this is how I would buy the song.

    • That could work, but they would only allow you to upload the censored versions i guess.

      • Actually saying that, there would be no point in them having both versions on the disc as an age rating would still apply due to the uncensored versions.

I fear it will be censored versions of songs to try & appease everyone unfortunately.

      • I was thinking about this and although the cd’s say ‘Parental Advisory Explicit Content’ there is no age rating on them, so I can’t see why this should be applicable to the game.

  2. I think I am one of the only people closely involved in music games that is actually looking forward to this, been waiting over a year now.

    • DJ-Katy while not closely involved in music games, I am really looking forward to this myself.

      • you guys excited for wiley, right?

      • I can’t say I am to be honest. Not big on the UK stuff.

    • You’re just excited because you might finally get me playing a music game and then I’d have to shut up moaning about them ;)

      • Ahaha.. I’ve tried to get my ex into Guitar Hero and Rock Band for about 2 years now. Ironically it was him who suggested we get SingStar when we lived together, I was never interested in that, but it got addictive. Finally, last month, I forced Rock Band 2 on him, gave him a guitar to take home, and now he really likes it. Finally I will have a buddy to play local multiplayer with, yay!

And – before you mention the fact he is a man – it was just a phase ok, cut me some slack :D
