With a speculative release date for id Software’s RAGE now out in the open, some may be wondering: how is this future title coming along and will it really be the bees’ knees?
From this old trailer shown at QuakeCon and a more recent E3 2010 interview with Creative Director Tim Willits (both embedded here for your optical enjoyment), we’re firmly in the “Hells Yes” camp. Check out some shooting, racing, a little more shooting, some desolate hinterland laid bare by an earth-shattering comet, and then some more shooting just to round things off. Oh, and there’s a crossbow thingy in there as well. ColossalBlue will be happy.

Very Borderlands
Kamokazi-UK
Yeah… Very Borderlands.

Isn’t this trailer rather old? i’m sure i have seen this months ago already.
Kovacs
Yep – updated. Thanks.

I was reading in some magazine or other how every single texture is individually hand painted and not just brushed on like other games – that’s a lot of work right there.

Amost looks like Fallout crossed with Borderlands. Will keep an eye on this.
MistaPita
It looks like what Borderlands and Fallout SHOULD have looked like!
rht992
it looks like a lot of already awesome games being combined to make one awesome game . . . AWESOME!

“We have AI that change-up the way they fight”
For fuck’s sake! This American fascination with sticking “-up” at the end of words. Ruining the flow and English. I think it’s starting to get to me! Ha.
Bastards. Sorry. Couldn’t watch any more. First trailer was great.

Change-up is a valid, albeit very American, word. It’s a baseball term which has migrated into everyday usage across the pond. We would use the phrase “change of pace”.

I don’t want to sound confrontational but would we? There’s no need for extra words.
“We have AI that change the way they fight” will do. Although maybe “different AI” would be better and less clunky. I realise we have the cross pollination of references every now and again but usually when it’s still decent English (even if we tire of overuse of said phrases).
Kovacs
What I meant was: where he used the term “change-up” we would use “change of pace.” I’m not saying we would have used it in this particular instance. Just in general.
He’s describing how, through AI, the pace of the game can change. He’s explicitly referring to the PACE of the game here. Enemies will behave differently, maybe hanging back or being more cautious. The pace will change.
In baseball a “change-up” is “a ball that is thrown by a pitcher with the same motion as for a fastball but that travels with less speed, making the pitch more difficult for the batter to time.”
Though sounding similar, “change” is not synonymous with “change-up” here. Sure, the AI will also “change”, but change-up describes *how* it will change. In this case, by altering the pace. Hence, if he had said “We have AI that change the way they fight”, this is fine, but it doesn’t describe what type of change. “We have AI that change-up the way they fight” means there is a change but it also describes the change.

I now understand the phrase completely. Utter bollocks that it is. :-P
Seriously, though, this may well be the correct implementation of said phrase. Maybe. However, I hear a “xxxx-up” being used more and more and if it refers to the baseball phrase, I’ll be damned to hell and back if they know this. Which makes the phrase useless as we have the correct word already! :-)
Random aside: If he does, indeed, mean a change-up then the enemy will take the same motion but with a less speed (as you explained). This can only be a good thing. Boom! Headshot!! :-)

Couldn’t agree more.. I hate that expression with a passion, its one of the reasons I stopped checking the US PS Store for themes. I don’t want to “change up the look of my XMB”, I just want it to look nice.
.
What’s worse is that its only a matter of time before it gets adopted over here.. BTW, the trailer was Awesome! :D

I don’t mind evolution of language. I don’t mind us adopting new phrases here and there. All countries will do it to a certain degree. I just utterly loathe when something’s been butchered or chewed and spat out.

Looks like it’s shaping up well, but also looks like there’s a LONG way to go, warranting the release windows 13 months from now.
I get a similar feeling watching this footage as I did from Quake 4 and Prey before release – looked amazing but something doesn’t quite fit yet.
I get that impression from the gameplay vids of Crysis 2 as well, but that’s got less time to prove me wrong!
