It appears Sony are ahead of the Jailbreakers as the rumour is the next Firmware will detect the Jailbreak USB gizmo. Apparently the following email has been sent to people who have ordered the despicable device;
“Just a friendly update email and some advice for you over the coming days and weeks.
While PS Jailbreak team have told us it should be possible to support future firmware versions on the PS3, it is not guaranteed, they will need to access any newer firmwares than 3.41 and if needed release an update for the PS Jailbreak to support the newer firmwares.
So we wanted to give you all some advice that if a system update is released for the PS3 in the coming days or before you receive your PS Jailbreak which blocks system updates, we recommend that nobody update their PS3 for the time being.
If a PS3 system update newer than 3.41 is released you should keep an eye on the PS Jailbreak website for news on compatibility with the PS Jailbreak on the new firmwares. Only update your PS3 past 3.41 firmware if the PS Jailbreak team say that it’s safe to do.”
If this true then it’s fantastic news, the USB device will be rendered pretty much useless before people even receive it as Sony can instantly ban any PS3 with the device. Of course it won’t stop people using their PlayStation consoles offline but that will be a small minority.

Great news :D

What’s with all the negativity around this? Yes it opens the door to piracy on the PS3 (which was inevitable) but it also opens the door to homebrew and the convenience of having all your legitimate games stored on your HDD for easy access.
I think it’s great news, some things I am really looking forward to:
Emulators (imagine a full-speed Dreamcast or N64 emulator)
MKV X264 Player (the day no more converting will be required)
+ All the hundreds of other great homebrew games & apps bound to come.
At the end of it all, We now have a fully working exploit compatible with the latest fw. Noone interested in the scene unfolding is going to willingly update.
Right now, noone really knows for sure how Sony will detect the devices being used.
I’d bet if you only used it when the Internet Connection is disabled and if you removed all the neccersary files after use they’d have a pretty hard job of detecting you.

traces of the hack software will remain on the PS3 that how theyll know and detect you plus you BD games will be on your HDD thats how Sony will know detect and ban you simples this is 1 peice of piracy you wont be able to get away with
djhazardous
I’ll still be able to get away with it, I could just buy another PS3 just for this and never connect it to the internet.
Would give me an excuse to get that nice new blue Slim PS3. :D
Besides it’s all assumptions at the minute and noone knows for sure whether traces of the installation software will remain after removing.
Also, you could always back up games to an External HDD and there wouldn’t be any on the internal HDD for Sony to see, I doubt they would be able to browse users hard drives anyway.

I know for sure that traces will remain, because the PS3 logs every application launch event among many other things in a permanent file. You cannot delete the log.

A chip remembers pretty much everything, so even if you unplug it to go online for some reason like a PSN purchase, a bug update, a firmware update… Sony will know the device has been plugged in as it will be reported as part of the data that is transferred each time you connect.

Sounds Great.

maybe Sony will go Microsoft way and before usb hard drives or thumb drives could be used they would have to be formatted in the ps3 and then everything on them could on be read by the ps3 as everything would be encrypted on the usb drives…
Mike
It was only a matter of time.
Flaming Turkeys
I’ve said this before, the only logical solution is to remove use of the usb ports…EVERYONE WINS :D

all these hackers, should be ashamed of themselves, as they dont know what enjoyment they are missing in games.
rossthebassist
I hate hackers, spoil everything they do….
Look people can humm and har and say but homebrew this and emulators that, at the end of the day IF Nintendo wanted N64 games on the PS3 they would put them out, but they dont, you wanna play classic N64 games, by a console or get a wii and use the virtual console…
there is no benifit, blu-ray discs are virtually idestructable and you have to be seriously troubles to damage one makes the whole “backup” talk rubbish. launch day 60gb model with all my launch games, not a scratch not a blemish… as it should be.
if people wanna use this device go ahead i want you banned, i might get flammed or hated for saying it but i dont care, id rather spend £100+ on REAL games.

Got to say there is a disturbing lack of understanding in these comments on the difference between ‘hackers’ and ‘commercial pirates’, of which PS3 Jailbreak Team are the latter.
Without hackers, there would be no way to test PS3’s security against piracy in the first place when the security protocols were conceived during the PS3’s development. Without hackers, you would not have safe online banking or shopping. Without hackers, you would not have WPA2-PSK wireless connections.
You all have a lot to thank hackers for, they are the drivers of improved security with each iteration of new hardware, software or firmware.

Great. So i have to download a compulsory update just because of some silly hackers -.-‘
