Kinect Camera As Seen In The Wild

With the Kinect beta up and running for some lucky few, it was only a matter of time before pics of the hardware in actual living spaces made it onto the interweb. Kotaku has posted a whole host of images, from a smiley face instruction placard to what the device looks like plonked in front of a Samsung TV.

There’s no real surprise here. After all, we’ve known what the camera looks like in principle for sometime; namely a dark, legless Wall-E. But what has got tongues wagging is just how large the camera seems; something we’re only now able to fully perceive when the device is viewed up close and in context with a normal gaming set up.

The post on Kotaku also mentions how early users are reporting “mixed” results with Microsoft’s new motion controller tech. Focusing on the good news, however, bundled with Kinect Sports and Kinect Joyride, beta testers are reporting that, though there is some lag in the games, it’s not that noticeable. Voice commands have also been reported as to be working as expected.

We’re guessing “Kinect! Down in front!” is a popular call. Suddenly those reports suggesting oodles of space is required to fully experience Microsoft’s next big thing are starting to make sense. It’s nothing to do with detection – the camera takes up half the room*. Check the link for more images of the shiny, ever-watchful behemoth.

*We’re kidding, of course. It does look somewhat bigger than we expected, however.

  1. Its huge! I think thats bigger than a Wii!

  2. The distance it needs between the 2 cameras to see in a 3D space and have depth perception and an array of mics would surely mean it has a minimum size, no?

    • That makes sense, it could be down to the positioning of the 2 cameras relative to each other.

  3. I certainly wouldn’t buy this and I think it won’t be good at all. But it does have the potential to be a silly craze ie. Wii, COD.

    • On the other hand, I think Move will be okay, since it has compatibility with proper games, but will go the way of the eyetoy and no one in the real world will have heard of it and will probz be out of production in a year

  4. Mega fugly.

  5. we’re gonna need a bigger boat!

  6. Hey, look! It’s Xbox Slim and Kinect Phat!

  7. I does look abit bigger then i expected … Will take up about 3/4 of my TV.
Glad im not getting it then! ;)

  8. What’s the point of making it so damn big? I see that it needs the infared and the lens(es)? but why is it so damn wide?

  9. That’s far too big for my liking.
