Valkyria Chronicles 3 Heads To PSP

After much rumour and speculation, SEGA has finally confirmed that Valkyria Chronicles 3 is indeed on the way, and that its platform of choice is once again the PSP.

Titled ‘Valkyria Chronicles 3: Unrecorded Chronicles’, the game will take place in Europe, 1935 and will focus on Gallian Army squad 422, which consists of criminals, deserters and the like.  This squad also has the rather charming nickname of ‘the Nameless’ because its members are referred to by number.  Of course things aren’t exactly black and white, and some of the squad members have been placed in 422 rather unjustly.

The game is no longer mission based, instead you will encounter battles as you work your way through the story.  The battle system is getting tweaked, and the maps will be more expansive and varied.  Wireless play won’t be included – instead the resources that would have gone into that are being distributed to various other gameplay mechanics.

In an interview with Famitsu, Valkyria Chronicles 3 producer Shinji Motoyama commented on the fact that the franchise has not returned to the PS3 as they have yet to come up with an idea revolutionary enough – that’s not to say a PS3 game has been ruled out.

He also feels that portability is a big plus, saying:

“In an era where everyone is busy, we felt PSP was best in order to make Valkyria Chronicles bigger.”

Has the fact that SEGA has stuck with the PSP put you off the game?

  1. Yes. They should have focused on the PS3. Shame.

  2. I also believe they should’ve focused on the ps3. I know the Psp is massive in japan, and i know this will probably sell really well there, but i don’t see it getting huge european or us sales. It’ll sell, just not massively, then again it probably wouldn’t on ps3 either. I’ve yet to play either of their games, though they’re probably right down my street, lack of trophies and hordes of other games means i probably never will.

    • I’ve not done any research but I’ve got the feeling that the first game only sold a tiny amount in the western world anyway. I know it kinda sucks but I can understand their reasoning.

  3. Humph ,Well I am Disappointed and I will not be buying a PSP just to enjoy the game

  4. Well, that’s disappointing. I feel a PS3 version would’ve fared better sales-wise, on the basis that PS3 owners who had missed out first time around (either intentionally in response to the lack of trophy support, or simply because it became hard to get a hold of a copy only a short while after release) would be keen to play this one – like with Ico and Shadow of the Colossus.

  5. I’ve been playing 1 again recently, and it is fantastic, but so much better than 2 in nearly every way. The only thing 2 has is the wireless support. Without that, and on PSP, I’m not even sure I’d get this, despite being a fan of the series.

  6. Love VC1 and was looking forward to 3, shame it’s on the PSP.

Yet another game on the mobile platform which is better suited to sofa based (non-mobile) gaming.

    • Totally agree with your statement and it is the only reason why I haven’t bought VC2 – I just don’t play my PSP enough to justify it.

  7. Bleh not buying it for my PSP. Should be on PS3

  8. Bit disappointed but i have been playing VC2 on my PsP this last week or so and it is fantastic and i will pick up the third if its released over here one day .

  9. Bah I say. I hate gaming on the PSP. VC3 with online multiplayer would have worked brilliantly on the PS3! I guess the low sales of the first have put them off somewhat.

  10. Hopefully they port VC3 to PS3…
