NFS: Hot Pursuit ‘Autolog Explained’ Video

You hear that sound?  That’s the sound of EA laughing its socks off after hearing the latest news on GT5.  For many – myself included – November was going to be a tough month as it would mean choosing between the latest Need for Speed or the racing king that is Gran Turismo.  That’s not much of an issue now!

In this latest video producer at Criterion Games – Matt Webster – explains to us how Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit’s new Autolog feature works.

  1. Great video though I’ve replayed it and paused it quite a few times to actually get a handle on the screens. It sounds like a refined version of Burnout’s on-line system which is very welcome.
Getting excited about this game now.

  2. Can’t think of anything I’ve heard of that I want more, easily my number 1 game that I look forward to above every single other game

Hopefully GT5’s delay will be sufficient enough to let this have a chance to shine on the PS3, massively different games of course but there will be some overlap in install-base.

Roll on release day, I’m so excited I could burst

    • I get the feeling that after playing this beauty, GT5 will only be a “meh” experience. :D
Way to produce a promising game withing a reasonable amount of time!

    • I think this looks amazing and for me, there is no rivalry between this and GT5. Two of the games I still play loads now are Burnout and GT5:p and I never think “I want to play a racing game but don’t know which”, it’s always down to whether I want to break out the wheel and do proper driving or just use the DS for some arcade crazyiness

      • Absolutely, as different as chalk & cheese

but in the battle for people’s wallets the overlap in fan-base will make a difference to sales

      • Yeah, I mean if I could only afford one it would be a hard choice. I would probably go for GT5 but I would be properly gutted cos this does look epic.
I expect I can buy this, drop the change from £40 into a low interest account and then, by the time GT5 actually arrives, I’ll have enough to buy that too :)

  3. I will definately have to get this game :)
The joy I’ve had with Burnout Paradise – admittedly I got a bit annoyed with the cost of some of the DLC but at the same time it was a hell of a lot of fun.

I can only assume that this game will be just as much fun – Criterion can do no wrong in my eyes (obviously if the game is a buggy piece of crap my opinion will change)

  4. All EA need to do know is release this a week early to really kick Kaz when he’s down!

  5. Websterhoff is an awesome man.

  6. Even if I could play GT5 this interests me more, looks more original and not just insanely high fidelity graphics.

    • Well NfSHP’s graphics are insanely good anyway, but even if they weren’t there’s far more to a quality image than polygon count alone.

I’ve read about devs experimenting with reducing resolution, and using the resources saved to have better lighting, shading and other processing effects and results were perceived to be more impressive, but of course polygon count makes a nice bullet point and impresses the fanboys in the will waving contests.

Seriously cannot wait for this, every single thing about it screams quality AND fun

      • It was loads of fun at Eurogamer, and that was just one race.

      • Do we know about the frame rate on this. Burnout always seemed really smooth so I wonder if this will be as good. Not that numbers matter, I mean the general feeling really.

  7. Is it just me or do they seem to be making an awful lot of fuss about the autolog which, really, doesn’t seem all that amazing?
I mean it does seem like a great idea and well integrated but it’s essentially just a messaging system which launches chellenges, not exactly mould breaking.

    • It’s also doing the part with social gaming and competing against your friends high scores etc… just like Burnout Paradise did. It’s not hugely mould breaking, but I can’t think of many games that do it and I don’t know of any that do it to this extent.

    • I can’t think of another game where it’s social features are pushed to the front end in such a useful or easy to use way

Most games have leaderboards, which seem positively ancient compared to this

      • I still remember playing Burnout’s crash mode with friends and trying to beat each others high scores.

      • In Blur you can do a similar thing, but admittedly it is not as automatic or naturally integrated as this. You can challenge a friend once you complete a certain event etc and they will be notified and can jump into that event to try and beat you.

  8. GT5 delay means this just got pre-ordered! I can now have both this year, plus more of my mates are picking this up then GT5.

  9. I notice lots of screenshots for this have what appear to be webcam shots of the players (although I guess they *could* be uploaded photos).
I really hope they’ve kept the Mugshot feature from Burnout, as that alone was a work of genius!

    • Agreed. Some of the hats in mugshots I have are hilarious and I even have one of a hot girl giving me the finger… make up your own jokes
