Assassin’s Creed II was one of the stand out games of 2009 and featured heavily in our 2009 game of the year voting. It’s disappointing to see that less that half of those that played the game actually made it to the end.
Assassin’s Creed: Brotherhood mission director, Gaelec Simard, told Joystiq that only 40% had finished the game, which he believed was “huge”. The figure is 5% higher than the original Assassin’s Creed figure which was based on Xbox Achievements. The Assassin’s Creed II numbers are based of information obtained via Ubisoft’s Uplay service which provides figures on all platforms. Like Achievements users need to be connected to the internet in order for Ubisoft to record the statistics.
40% may seem a low figure but statistics obtained Gamasutra last year suggested less than 30% completed GTA IV. Assassins Creed II still fell a fair way short of the likes of Gears of War 1 & 2, Halo 3 and Call of Duty 4 which all saw more than 60% complete their campaigns.
Simard added “In the industry, the number of games that are finished is more like five to ten percent. We all think people finish games, but when you start asking around, you’ll find that a lot of people don’t get to the end. We want the player to experience the whole package, so that’s something we’re trying to push.” What that means for Assassin’s Creed: Brotherhood isn’t quite clear yet.

Just a question – it seems that alot of people not just on this site but many I have visited never finish games. I would like to know why? If it is something you ahev thought about and have justified spending £30 – £40 on, why would you not want to see it through to the end. I buy alot of games and have to say finish the majority of them.
Whats your thoughts?

I used to fall heavily into this category & it was mainly due to release schedules alone – I pick up a game, i play it & get some enjoyment out of it & then the next shiny thing comes along which i need to get, generally leaving the previous game incomplete. However, since the inclusion of trophies, i have found that i am a lot more driven to get through the stories of most games & see it through to its conclusion (& platinum trophy if i can be bothered) – Although perhaps i have also just matured a little & now like to see the story through? Dunno really. Have definitely completed more games this gen than any other though.

I don’t buy a lot of games so if it’s bought then I want to finish it. I rent a lot from Lovefilm though and some of those are played once or twice then sent back and some are kept longer but rarely long enough to completely finish or plat. If I really like a rental I’ll probably keep an eye out for it pre-owned at some point then finish it.

I think you’ll find that it’s because too many of them spend far too much time on here posting comments instead of getting on with the gaming!

If a game sucks then wasting money on it is one thing, but I refuse to waste too much of my time on it.

I finished the first one, currently playing the second and I do belive I’ll play it to the end.

I find it interesting that Ubisoft are using the achievments to research players habbits. I wonder how many do this and use the info for their next game. I had never thought about trophies being used to track gameplay by devs.

AC2 is one of my favourite single player games of all time; I’ve completed it twice, although the ending still doesn’t make any sense to me!

O_o
I beat it with about 60%

I almost completed it then I bought a Slim so I had to transfer all my saves. Ubi were kind enough to lock the AC2 one meaning I had to start again, and I just wasn’t up for that,

AC2 is one of my few Plats.
if a game becomes a chore, then it is not likely that it will get finished by me. or if its a ‘crikey I am glad I didn’t buy that’ rental.
on the other hand I sometimes find myself not playing a game that I am enjoying simply because I am near the end and don’t want it to be over!

I can understand people not finishing a sandbox title as it’s easy to get distracted wandering around or exploring, but what’s the excuse for not finishing stuff like Gears, Halo or CoD? Those games are completely linear and have about an afternoon’s play each in their campaigns.
Some people just seem to waste their cash. If I buy a game and don’t finish it, I feel like I’ve thrown my money away… unless I stop playing because it’s too shit obviously, then I’m just cutting my losses.
