Rumour: PSP2 Twice The Memory of PS3/Xbox 360

If the rumour that Sony are purposely releasing erroneous information about the PSP2 in an effort to identify any whistle-blowers still in the company is true, expect to hear some truly outlandish claims about the successor to the PSP over the coming months.

One such new nugget of potentially spurious information regarding the handheld is how much memory it’s packing. According to Kotaku, the device will sport a monstrous 1GB of RAM. To put that figure in comparison, both the PS3 and Xbox 360 have half that amount.

The handheld is also touted as having dual analogue sticks (if it didn’t, Sony’s Tokyo office would probably be attacked on the day of the PSP2’s launch), support HD graphics, with a storage solution yet to be decided. Memory sticks have been mooted.

We’ve heard another tantalising rumour about the device, something not mentioned in Kotaku’s article, which we’re going to sit on a while longer in case the aforementioned witch-hunt in Sony turns out to be true.

  1. Even in HD, the psp screens aren’t anywhere near the small tv standard size (obviously) and I have trouble reading from those small screens let alone a handheld device. How will HD graphics and all that power be shown off?

  2. And if Epic can make something as awesome as Epic Citadel with half of that on the iPhone 4 then imagine what they and other big names can do on this ! Eyegasm

  3. So that was the daily PSP2 rumour with a hint of the BBC show the Spooks. Wonder what Friday will bring, solar powered and has a built in soda stream maker. God I really want the PSP2 to blow me away. Do Sony have it in them still.

    • ” Do Sony have it in them still.”
*In Shakespearian voice* That is the question.

    • Don’t forget they’ve replaced the UMD drive with a fully functional toaster! ;-)

      • Whoops have I outed them….. Look out for the Sony witches….

      • Now that’s innovation in gaming… and just damn practical, who doesn’t get the munchies every now and then during a gaming session?

      • and it will have a built in blender. :P

      • No, but it will blend! :-)

  4. 1gb ram is nothing nowadays, A high end phone is expected to have 756mb ram nowadays. They shouldnt take the route of the ps3 and underspec some parts and overspec others. The ram should be 2gb and the CPU would have to be more that 1ghz if it stands to be future proofed. I think storage would have to be a limitation unless it uses a ssd.

    • It’d melt, like a cheese toastie in Ifrit’s coin purse.
If there was an amazing breakthrough in coolant tech then they could use a pc spec level of RAM and speed but it’s just not gonna happen tomorrow. (or the next day)
+1 on the more than 1Ghz speed though, I’m sure they could squeeze it towards the 2 mark.

  5. There must at least one new type of memory card (higher capacity, faster, more secure) in development and i wouldn’t be surprised if Sony were working on one themselves. That might be why the format is still undecided. At the same time I’m wondering if PSP2 might support Memory stick plus another newer type of stick also.

  6. Interesting tactic, potentially making stuff up to ‘out’ a mole, however it won’d do Sony any harm either as such outlandish claims will take some of the wind out of the 3DS sales.

    • Completely agree, novalists do it be sending out slightly different drafts of their books to different people to know who leaked it. So I can’t see why Sony can’t do it. It also generates alot of buzz about it. I also find it ammusing that as Sony are known for not being able to keep a secret they are using that to their advantage witl these crazy rumours.

  7. One thing Sony do need to get to grips with, with the PSP2 is the definition of ‘mobile gaming’

It certainly isn’t to create a powerhorse with a weaker than the competition battery life, or to release a load of AAA blockbuster games which are better suited to gaming on a sofa when you can concentrate for hours on end, rather than games suited to stealing 5mins on a bus or in a waiting room

    • That is true when u look at the success of iPhone but at the same time that is what made the psp different/better to the DS. And still does. Some of the games u can nip in and out of, especially the downloadable ones. But then the great thing about it was the fact u could be playing a fully fledged GTA or GOW on a portable system. Anywhere. But I think taking UMD out will make speed of access to a game far quicker which might help.

    • So according to you, the thing that’s wrong with the PSP is that it has proper games?

The reason I got one is coz of the decent games for it. If they were all just shitty tetris ripoffs i’d never of bought one.

  8. Personally I wouldn’t mind if there was a removal of UMD physical media if it were replaced, liek for example by memory stick media as some have said here. I wouldn’t mind having to import the game from a memory stick to go physical media-less on the go as long as I had some physical media to come back to in case of loss of data.

  9. all i have to say is, no physical media, no sale.

  10. HD and dual analogue? Will buy! [well if its backwards compatible]
