Rumour: PSP2 Twice The Memory of PS3/Xbox 360

If the rumour that Sony are purposely releasing erroneous information about the PSP2 in an effort to identify any whistle-blowers still in the company is true, expect to hear some truly outlandish claims about the successor to the PSP over the coming months.

One such new nugget of potentially spurious information regarding the handheld is how much memory it’s packing. According to Kotaku, the device will sport a monstrous 1GB of RAM. To put that figure in comparison, both the PS3 and Xbox 360 have half that amount.

The handheld is also touted as having dual analogue sticks (if it didn’t, Sony’s Tokyo office would probably be attacked on the day of the PSP2’s launch), support HD graphics, with a storage solution yet to be decided. Memory sticks have been mooted.

We’ve heard another tantalising rumour about the device, something not mentioned in Kotaku’s article, which we’re going to sit on a while longer in case the aforementioned witch-hunt in Sony turns out to be true.

  1. Oooh Rumour eh, what could that be?

  2. I thought the PS3 only had 256mb?
Interesting thoughts about a Sony witch hunt though ;)

    • Yes, very. If what I’ve heard is anything to go off…

    • 256 system + 256 video. It’s generally bundled together when talking about its combined memory power, however.

  3. So Bayonetta 2 exclusive for PSP2?

  4. I would just want to clarify, the UMD will be removed, but not physical medium’s altogether, Kotaku are mentioning that it may be a storage memory card, although not final by Sony, but from the sounds of it and from official word it has physical medium, sorry but its kind of misleading from this post.

    • Thanks – post has been updated.

      • “Sony’s PSPgo is UMD-free version of the PSP, and sources tell Kotaku that the PSP2 will follow in the footsteps of that portable. Games will be stored on a Memory Stick, according to one source. Though we’ve also been told that Sony is still puzzling out what the final non-UMD storage solution will be for the PSP2”

Well sorry to be nagger, but physical medium is not totally considered moot, only that Sony haven’t confirmed a final choice of delivery of the games, whilst one source has commented on the inclusion of a Memory Stick. I don’t know whether I’m understanding it wrong or what, you tell me perhaps?

      • and also, in accordance to that quote, it means that the PSP2 is doing the same as the PSPgo and dropping the use of UMD, not physical medium. Sorry if i seems I’m being very pedantic or ranting I just want clarification.

      • Mooted as in “considered.” They’re considering the storage solution.

      • Okay, thanks Kovacs, I appreciate it.

      • I think it would be a good idea to sell games etc. on memory sticks?
They could make all/part of the stick read-only.

  5. Oh no, its download only! Watch all the nerds riot about this. I don’t see why everyone wants physical games for portables. For a home console, yes. For a portable, I don’t see much value in it.

    • I don’t know…. memory size of a proper PSP 2 game scares me

      • It’d more the prices on the psn store. They are to High and and they do price drops on a game half a year after the release.

  6. Could the PSP2 be capable of PS3 graphics? if so we might see an Uncharted game for it. Lets hope the Psp 2 will be bc.

    • I doubt the CPU is as powerful, takes a lot to cool the Cell BE

      • It’s quite promising to speculate however, considering there are techniques which could mask the lesser hardware and provide an excellent alternative and taking advantage of the smaller screen than 42inch HDTV’s, such as using a tessellation engine for polygon rendering, or Virtual Textures for high-resolution textures, many things can be done as a “Cheap” alternative, but Uncharted-esque quality on modern handheld components isn’t too far from what is really possible.

  7. 1 GB of RAM? Doubtful if that’ll be the final number.

    • Seems weird. Engadget seems to be reporting that it has 512MB of RAM, and I think their numbers are a lot more accurate than Kotaku. :\

  8. 1gb doesn’t sound that exagerated, new phones have 768mb of ram and are only in the limelight for 18-24 months at the very most, not 5+ years.
It is suprising at how much the developers manage to get out of the ps3 and 360 with 513 mb of ram

  9. My netbook has 2Gb of RAM & no where near the capabilities of either the PS3 or the Xbox.
    Possibly the processor? Aha.

  10. “It is suprising at how much the developers manage to get out of the ps3 and 360 with 513 mb of ram”

It’s 512 MB mate. Perfectionism, I know, but I hate wrong facts when I see it.
