TSA’s Top 100 of 2011 – #58 Battlefield 3

EA DICE’s long-running and multi-million selling war game series, Battlefield has manifested itself over its long history as a WWII title, a Vietnam based romp and even a futuristic shooter. As a franchise it’s renowned for being diverse, meticulously crafted, and always eager to incorporate new things into an already impressive armoury of features.

Though Battlefield vets might spend their well-earned (hopefully tequilla fuelled and señorita filled) nights reminscing about 1942, it’s the series’ later campaigns that modern gamers will likely identify more with.

Bad Company 2 became an almost act of defiance against Modern Warfare 2; gamers who were disappointed with Activision’s vanguard shooter gravitating toward BC2 with an almost religious zeal. That’s not to suggest any spiteful, unfounded favouritism was on show here. Many consider BC2’s squad-based dynamic and vehicular combat mechanics superior to MW2’s own particular brand of warfare. It did create a schism among shooter fans, however, and it’s hard to argue that dyed-in-the-wool fans of either title rarely have a kind word for the other.

Little is known about Battlefield 3 other than the fact that it will use DICE’s Frostbite 2.0 engine (so expect environments to explode even prettier than before) and those who picked up the Tier 1 Limited Edition of EA’s new-kid-on-the-chopping-block, Medal of Honor, will receive an invite to Battlefield 3’s beta “within a year of MoH’s release date.” Just another eleven months to wait, then.

Just like there are comic fans on staff here at TSA there are also those of use who really enjoy shooting both friends and strangers alike in the face online with an assortment of weaponry. The Battlefield series has been the gold standard of online shooters. It may exist slightly in the shadows of Activision’s seemingly unstoppable media-magnet behemoth, Call of Duty, but to those in the know, and for those of us who prefer our action with a little more strategic meat on its bones, there’s some good killin’ here.

  1. Although I like CoD, particulary 1, 2, 4 and the recent black ops, I much prefer the battlefield series. Since battlefield 2142 I have always enjoyed the series a lot more than any other fps, because of a number of reasons. The chief one being that it’s mainly people of the age rating and above that play it, not 12 years olds who can swear a lot more effectively than I’ve ever been able to.

    • mate i totally agree with u 1,2 and 4 were by far the best but the battlefield franchise from the first battlefield to bf:bc2 i have played and played for along time ive had clans that i have never had on any other fps
battlefield i feel has been one of those games that is a secret gem and i kind of like it like that
it has everything that cod hasn’t got and more
long live the battlefield franchise and all who play her

  2. Yes it’s coming. I really like the Battlefield series despite mostly playing CoD. I’m just a bit better in objective based gamemodes then the endless Team Deathmatches on CoD.
Anybody knows when the Beta hits psn?

    • “… an invite to Battlefield 3′s beta “within a year of MoH’s release date.”

      That’s all we know.

  3. Like I said: I like both, but BFBC feels more real. You really feel like you’re going to the frontline and you are in a war, while COD feels more like a frantic cage fight.

  4. I put myself squarely in the CoD camp, but I really enjoy Battlefield games too. The players that you allude to who bad-mouth the other franchise and refuse to play are only really mugging themselves.

  5. Im a proper Veteran , been playing since 1942 and own every game , expansion , map-pack and mod created. I used to enjoy Cod on PC as the single player on the first two was absolutely extraordinary but the multiplayer was never a patch on Battlefield . I had to buy a PS3 when i heard BFBC was going to be console only and i even had a little fun on Cod4 online for a short time but the small maps , lack of teamwork , poor graphics , run and gun selfishness and most importantly the maturity of the other players put me off the series for good and i will never buy another Cod now .
Im really excited about not only the upcoming Battlefield Vietnam expansion but also the VIP map-pack 7 (finally 4 new maps!). Somehow i missed that news and only found out about that yesterday .

    • I didn’t think it would be long before you commented :)

  6. Iv played every battlefield game since 1942 and I have to say that the battlefield franchise is clearly supperior to all other shooters (IMO atleast :P) Still remember when I was young enough to go to the big computer partys where they had 1942 competitions. Was the greates gameing experience iv ever had 8D

  7. Looking forward to this but still a long way off yet. saying that it will probably be out before gt5 actually gets out on the shelf. 24th my ass lol :) but in the mean time looking forward to the VIP map pack 7 with new maps YES new maps and also the Vietnam expansion pack should keep me busy for a while does any1 know when the new maps are out??? Cod’s ok but it’s the little kids that put me off. Screaming over the coms. Much prefere battlefield.

  8. BFBC2 is the only Battlefield I’ve been involved in as I’ve only played CoD in the past. I’ve been converted fully by this which in my opinion (don’t want to start fan wars here) is the best online game I’ve ever had the pleasure of playing.
So needless to say that B3 will be amongst my most anticipated games of 2011.

  9. While I’m disappointed BF3 is coming to consoles, I’m still excited and haven’t lost hope that the PC version will shine.

Having said that, at its core BFBC2 still had the same revive class errors that BF games have always had, I just hope they don’t forget their PC following.

  10. 3 Words… BAD ASS COMPANY!
