It’s been a while since we had a sports game on the list. Never fear, as proving we’re all not fixated on superhero games and weird Japanese guff, Virtua Tennis 4 grand slams its way into our top 50. We think we know why.
Exclusive to the PS3, the fourth serving of Sega’s popular tennis title is built puposely for PlayStation Move. And now that we have the orbicular wand, we want more quality games to play with it. An obvious fit for Sony’s new motion device, we’re assuming this desire among TSA staff has likely catapulted Virtua Tennis 4 up the rankings. No Move control, and we doubt it would have featured so highly. Make a note Sony.
Left and right movement is controlled by the game, though players are able to dash back or sprint into the net by stepping back or forward respectively. Presenting the action in first-person perspective, the camera zooms out to offer you an isometric view of your position after striking the ball toward your opponent. As the ball is returned to you, the game switches back into first-person mode, allowing you to feel what it’s like to be on the wrong end of a Murray super-serve. Using the accuracy of Move, you can even add slice and top-spin to your shots by adjusting the angle of impact.
Virtua Tennis 4 and Move is a natural choice. And considering Virtua Tennis 3 was a solid offering of the serve and volley game, we’re fairly confident Sega’s developers will combine the pedigree of the series with this new opportunity to create the perfect match. Or it’ll turn out to be a bit of a Kournikova: looks great on paper but ends up remembered for its promise before failing to deliver and retiring early to cop off with a popstar. One of the other.
We find out which when we get to smash countless thundering forearm shots at each other in Virtua Tennis 4 come spring of next year. You can check out our preview of the game here.

Now this is one badboy that has really got me hyped , picked up my move for £27 in Asda and a fire damaged copy of Sports Champions with no instructions or box (disc smells of smoke!) off ebay last week .
Really loving the excellent 1:1 , Virtua Tennis could be really special if they get it right .

Fire-damaged!?

Yea even some of the paint has come away from the top of the disc but it works perfectly and its a game that im never going to sell as its the best game for the Move , brilliant fun with a few mates and beer .

Sounds great. I just hope the constant camera switching doesn’t have a nauseating effect.
Voganlight
Wait, You don’t move left and right as well? I thought I read in your review that that works the same way as the forward and backward mechanism. Still, looking forward to it!

From Dan’s preview.
“Want to get in close to the net? Then simply move forward in real life.”
Not seeing where Dan said you manually control left and right to be honest.
Voganlight
hehe give me a break.
It was just what I thought, thanks for clearing it up ^^
Voganlight
“the game knows exactly where you are on the court and your on screen avatar matches it perfectly. Want to get in close to the net? Then simply move forward in real life.”
You pulled it out of context, this is where I got it from.
Kovacs
I didn’t pull anything out of context! :) I was curious myself, I checked and I pasted in the one line where moving is mentioned!
:)

Its just the automated control that worries me a bit.
But still it sounds good. Lets hope they deliver.
hazelam
did they ever reveal if you can play it without move?
TSBonyman
The first person perspective sounds interesting and as it’s PS3-exclusive hopefully the Move controls will be well implemented.

Virtua Tennis 4?
Running out of games to include?

Not at all, VT4 was one of the highlights of Gamescom this year.

if u want an arcade type game, this is the
or if u want a simulateor, the topsin is the one
the gt of tennis games

The arcade feel to virtua tennis is much more fun than topspin. I find that the learning curve for top spin too high for me so i gave up whereas in virtua tennis the controls are perfectly to master from the first game. Because of its arcadiness move is a much better accompaniment to virtua tennis than top spin.
E8_BALL_
agree with the move aspect, however were all different as to arcade or simulation
eg more people like cod core to hcore, im the later
im happy as both u & i are catered fo
topgear
yeah i agree, however I like to play a wide range of games, some games realistic and others arcadey. For me i think VT4 would be an awesome game as it would build on VT3 as VT09 was absolutely rubbish.
E8_BALL_
i sincerely hope this delivers for you
sounds good
what can i say, i like all us games to be happy & catered for :)

I’m also really looking forward to this, although the inability to move my player around the court is a bit of a downer. I love the old Virtua Tennis games though, so I’m sure this will be another solid offering and the Move support is fantastic, especially as it is being build with Move in mind.
