Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Has Brand New Engine

Praise the Lord on high,  sacrifice a chicken, meditate, do what ever you have to do give thanks that the new Elder Scrolls game will have a brand new engine.

I have spent the whole weekend struggling Fallout: New Vegas which, in spite of the recent comprehensive patch is still crashing repeatedly for me. So, the news that Skyrim will not run on current Bethesda engine is the best news of the year. Nick Breckon, Community Manager at Bethesda, broke the news via Twitter:

We can now confirm that the TES V: Skyrim engine is all-new. And it looks fantastic.

The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim has a release date of November 11, 2011, no formats have been announced yet.

  1. thank god I read somewhere that they were using the old one great news.

  2. cool beans

  3. Quote from wikipedia:

“Skyrim will utilise a new in-house engine, forgoing the Gamebryo engine used for the previous two installments in the series.[4][5][6][7] The new engine will incorporate some existing technology used in other Bethesda games, such as Oblivion and Fallout 3.[8] Executive producer Todd Howard has stated that the studio has invested in new talent to significantly improve the characters and animation over previous Bethesda games.”

Why? That’s all bugged to hell. Just start again from scratch, and make sure you do some f#?king testing this time.

    • That’s not remotely true. There’ll be physics engine code and maybe some cloth/material tech that’s perfect for plugging into the new engine. All is not lost. If it was they wouldn’t have been able to release a game in the first place.

Saying that, I’ll just be happy to play the new Elders Scrolls with NPC characters that don’t look like they’ve been drawn with a head-wand on a MagnaDoodle.

  5. Thank God for that! I hope a new engine doesn’t bring about a series of new bugs that were worse than the last! I love Oblivion and the Fallouts but having such annoying bugs that don’t let you finish quests is really a killer from a completionists point of view.

  6. Frankly I can’t see them not using a new engine, the Oblivion/Fallout 3 engine is looking very rusty these days.. I did hear talk of them using iD’s new Rage engine, but I guess they decided to build their own.. Hopefully it’ll be more stable than the last one.

  7. Praise the lord. fallout and and Oblivion were bugged to hell, would of got new vagas if it wasn’t so gliched. Come on Bethesda you can do better then this, look at morrowind.

  8. Excellent news! Some new dialogue would be lovely. Something other than “Greetings. I saw a mud crab the other day. Vile creatures. Farewell.”

  9. Hmm.. I actually didn’t know it was names Skyrim yet..
New engine, new chances! Sounds good to me. ^^

And yeah, checking the related post right now.

  10. the engine used in oblivion and the fallout games was pretty amazing when it was new, leaving the sewers and seeing countryside stretching for miles around you was a memorable moment, but the engine hasn’t aged well.

one thing i think they need to look at is getting rid of the loading when you go into a city or building, try and make the game one seamless experience.

and hopefully get rid of the bugs, oblivion had a few, but then they just exploded in fallout, i don’t think i’ve ever played another game with more bugs than fallout 3.

it’s a shame really as despite the bugs they really are bloody good game.
