PS3 Mass Effect 2 Uses ME3 Engine

We’ve all heard the saying “the best things come to those who wait”. It’s nice enough in theory, but counts for nought when lucky Xbox 360 owners have been ploughing through Mass Effect 2 and DLC for months now.  BioWare are planning to make it worth the wait for PS3 owners, and have a number of improvements in store.  Game producer Jesse Houston had the following to say:

“One of the first things you’re going to see is improved graphics.  We actually created the engine for Mass Effect 3 and used that to make Mass Effect 2 PS3. So we took the content, the story and all of the other assets that made up Mass Effect 2 and we put it into the Mass Effect 3 engine.

We’ve also gone ahead and made the experience much more solid on PS3, so for example the controls are geared towards the PS3 controller [although] you can switch it back to the old Xbox [layout] if you like. Other things like planet scanning have been improved; we’ve rolled up all of the patches; done a whole bunch of bug fixing.”

Add that to all the premium DLC that will be included on the disk, and one of 2010s best games might also be one of 2011’s.

  1. Woah, woah, woah. Now hang on a minute, how do we know the ME3 engine is fully-ready? Yes, it might be running, but has it been fully debugged yet for ME2 on PS3?

    • Well, the game producer just said it’s ready. Engines are what you work on first. It might be tweaked further between now and release, but it’s acceptable to think that the ME3 engine can perform everything now that the ME2 engine could do then.

    • ME2 on PS3 went gold a couple of days ago so I assume the engine is finished and out the door

      • I think he means the ME3 release

  2. Fantastic, pre-ordered this yesterday from The Hut using a discount voucher so I’ll be picking it up for a bargain too.

  3. Is this a fp perspective?

    • just went to have a look at pre-orders, screenshots ive seen on those pages suggest its 3rd person

    • Third person duck and cover shooter. Think Uncharted in space without all the climbing and jumping. The most similar I can think of is Gears if you’ve played that.

  4. I have no idea what this game is about, All ive seen is the boring trailer that was on UK tv when it was released for Xbox. But Ive heared that its awesome, lots of people recommend it and ive seen a trailer for ME3 so im gonna get it. Hopefully will be a fresh experience, something you rarely get nowadays with constant drips of information. Im going dark (haha) for Uncharted 3 also. dont want to spoil anything.

    • oh, and its gone gold, so no delays or anything! =D

  5. Grrrr, I need to dust off the XBox, ignore the hours of associated hand-cramp and finish the first one.

  6. Can’t wait for this game, wanted to play them for ages. Tempted to pre-order this right now.

  7. 1 – Can’t wait for this on the PS3. Got 1000GS (+ Lair of the Shadow Broker) on the 360 so will be VERY interested to check out the differences.
2 – I’m curious as to the ME1 “interactive novel”. On the plus side it be a shortcut to decision changes (e.g. the “krogan decision”, keeping it vague on purpose here) which will then roll through to ME3 without having to replay ME1. On the minus, without dedicating all the time into the full ME1 game I struggle to see how THAT opening scene will have nearly as much impact for people playing the ME series for the first time because you don’t have that initial vested interest and character connection that you would have from fully playing the first game.
3 – Why is the screen-grab at the top of the page from ME1?

    • It’s a Mass Effect story. It’s a Mass Effect image. Don’t read too much into it.

      • Damn, and here I was industriously making my conspiracy theory tin foil hat :(

  8. Whoever had that idea at HQ deserves a Christmas bonus. Lovely idea and what a great way to “pretend-reward” the patient PS3 community.

  9. Hell it’s just nice it’s coming at all, the improvements are just an added bonus!

  10. seen a clip looks much better.
