Geohot, fail0verflow Crack Open PS3

According to news surfacing overnight, the PS3’s private keys appear to have been found – or, at least, a method to recreate the key. The end result seems to be the same, with some claiming the PS3’s previously watertight security has been breached.

This all seems to stem from fail0verflow’s revelations at the end of last year in Berlin, with a different ‘hack’ than the infamous Jailbreak method being used.

What does this all mean? Well, it looks like this could open the doors to allowing users to run any unsigned code on a currently jailbroken console, regardless of firmware. fail0verflow’s original goal and aim was to enable Linux on any PlayStation 3, but it’s almost certain that this will be used for piracy.

An interesting by-product of all this is that the PSP’s keys also appear to have been found inamongst the PS3’s code, which is presumably due to the console’s ability to play some PSP games.

TheSixthAxis does not condone piracy and does not recommend the modification of your console – doing so is against the Terms of Use of the console and is possibly illegal.

  1. Sony F-uped big time.
Everyone knows you must use a random seed number in public/privete systems. There code always returns a random number of ****4****. Alright the random seed is FOUR.

As for sue the group, zero chance that would fly. Go back and have good read past court case’s ie Sega Vs Activision.

Go and watch the Epic fail by Sony at, i was there. PS there is more come as talking to them after this. LOL

PS I have already downloaded the tools and also have all the keys myself by using these tools. The securty in PS3 was VERY weak in the first place!

    • Sony managed to stave off piracy (on the PS3) for an incredible length of time compared to pretty much every disc-based console we’ve had over the last ten years. The security was superb and hackers around the world wanted to “win”. However, and sadly, it’s finally been cracked open like a digital piñata.

To say they fucked up big time is a bit over the top, fella.

      • Nah they did fuck up big time.

It’s true they managed to keep it away for four years, but it’s only because they were wise enough to support Linux. The moment they removed Linux support, it only stayed secure for 12 months and now it’s not only broken, it’s completely hacked 100%, which actually makes the PS3 less secure then the Wii and Xbox 360. They CAN’T fix this in the current systems.

And the really really big fuckup, other then removing Linux support, the incorrect use on random in ECDSA, that was fatal.

Somebody is loosing their job at Sony!

  2. According to (i’m not posting sources) a custom firmware (CFW) was just released, and users reported PSN is connecting normally. It won’t take long till cheaters start showing up in online matches.
    That’s some security system hum…
