SSX Deadly Descents Details

We’ve been harking on about a new SSX since the site went live, but finally, it’s happening.  We’re getting a next-gen snowboarding game and, whilst details are scarce, EGM (American magazine) has come out with what we think are the first few tidbits on the game in the latest issue.

So what’s in the game?  Well, first up is a rewind feature, which according to gossip this morning could work like Forza 3’s, allowing you to correct any mistake as you bomb down the hill.  And speaking of which, there are 17 regions spread across the globe (including Siberia, the Himalayas, Kilimanjaro, Caucasus and The Alps) and each is ridable in “all their 360º degrees of slopes” making up 70 open mountains.

The mountains aren’t going to be like the first couple of SSX games, though – they’re generated procedurally by the game using topographical data like Google Earth does.  It seems like the game engine can throw out a rendered mountain just by knowing which real life mountain to base it off.  There’s some talk of ‘SSX-ing’ up the courses, but we’ll wait and see.

Each mountain will have one kind of danger, for example thin air, ice or temperature, and the clothes you wear will be better suited to each condition.

  1. This sounds a bit more promising, but for me the major thing is going to be the feel of of the ride. If it feels like Sean White or Amped, where the boarder seemed to rock on the board instead of sliding out the board, I reckon it will flop. Fingers crossed!

  2. They should call it something else and make a proper SSX game.

  3. Scrap this & release Tricky ‘HD’ on PSN please EA. Better still, do a ‘SSX HD Collection’ (Tricky, SSX3 & On Tour maybe?) on blu-ray & you will have a definite sale from me. :)

    • Hopefully they’ll be a HD Collection, although EA have been atrocious with their back catalogue stuff (which they have tons of) there’s the EA Replay collection on PSP but its missing loads and I think HD Collections would be a great use of their time
      SSX HD Collection
      Road Rash HD Collection

In fact that’s all I want, if the gaming gods were to give me those two I’d die happy

  4. Since the since went live?

  5. Getting the right balance in this new version could be very, wait for it… tricky.

    • YEAAAHHHHHHHHHHH *The Who starts playing*

  6. I like the idea of the mountains being fully rideable in any direction now (it should stop that annoying out of bounds reset), but as many have said, it needs to retain what makes an SSX game in the first place.
Namely outrageous stunts and pure fun.

From the sounds of it it’s still a while away yet so things can change. Adding a sense of urgency and realism doesn’t hurt as long as the rest of the game elements can shine.

    You gotta believe.

As long as they throw in the tricks, rails, jumps and some insane drops (characters with character would help too) then I’m all good.

  7. Seriously? Wearing the right clothing plays a role? I dont wan a Snowboarding Sim, I want a Snowboarding Arcade game just like the old ones.

  8. I’m actually looking forward to this, but mainly because I’ve been aching for a new SSX game after the disappointment that was Blur (shhh). I really enjoyed the later levels in the PS2 games with the track events (opening up shortcuts, things falling over, etc while still pulling crazy stunts), and if this can deliver half of that I’ll be chuffed; there certainly needs to be more action though, as the SSX forumla got quite stale towards the end.

I’m already mourning the loss of Mercury City Meltdown though :(
