SSX Deadly Descents Details

We’ve been harking on about a new SSX since the site went live, but finally, it’s happening.  We’re getting a next-gen snowboarding game and, whilst details are scarce, EGM (American magazine) has come out with what we think are the first few tidbits on the game in the latest issue.

So what’s in the game?  Well, first up is a rewind feature, which according to gossip this morning could work like Forza 3’s, allowing you to correct any mistake as you bomb down the hill.  And speaking of which, there are 17 regions spread across the globe (including Siberia, the Himalayas, Kilimanjaro, Caucasus and The Alps) and each is ridable in “all their 360º degrees of slopes” making up 70 open mountains.

The mountains aren’t going to be like the first couple of SSX games, though – they’re generated procedurally by the game using topographical data like Google Earth does.  It seems like the game engine can throw out a rendered mountain just by knowing which real life mountain to base it off.  There’s some talk of ‘SSX-ing’ up the courses, but we’ll wait and see.

Each mountain will have one kind of danger, for example thin air, ice or temperature, and the clothes you wear will be better suited to each condition.

  1. Sounds as disappointing as the initial trailer suggested :(

  2. Eugh. The more we hear about this, the less it sounds like a SSX game :/

I still have hope this will be a fun snowboarding game, but not one worthy of the SSX name.

    • The PS3 is missing a good snowboarding game.

      • i played shaun whites last (last snoboards game) and really enjoyed that :P even though it didnt get the best response

  3. Hmmm… It sounds like it’s going to need an awful lot of “ssxing up” to be SSX. Real mountains and appropriate clothing? What next? Region specific authentic music?

    • You forgot the authentic lodge cabin to unwind in, and forced 10 hours sleep to ensure a safe descent on your next run.

  4. SSX is all about arcade action, not a snowboarding simulator. Hopefully the gameplay is an arcade overlay on this generation’s undoubted tech strengths

    • If they don’t allow me pick a player who can spin a board around his neck I won’t be happy.

    • Aye. Agreed, fella. It’s got the potential to be great but just not a great SSX game. It almost bears no resemblance.

      • thats what i was thinking. If this title was “Real Snow” or some other oddly titled snow boarding game then i think we would all be interested. But SSX game’s should be SSX game play. Its as stupid as making NBA Jam work/look like NBA Live

  5. Iv’e wanted this “since the since” too. (someone was bound to, thought i’d by nice about it).

It sUxx (<- see what I did there) that only a few details have been released and I am so uninterested now because of it!

[Fixed. Thanks. I left my editing hat on the bus – Kovacs]

  6. Lets see how this pans out, sounds pretty damn cool to me…..

  7. Oh dear, this doesn’t sound like the SSX I love and want. Better hook the PS2 up then.

  8. If its as fun as previous ones, I don’t care what they stick in it.

  9. This sounds horrible. I want the neon cities and stupidly vertical downhill slopes of SSX and SSX: Tricky, not the crappy “make your own way down the mountain” rubbish of SSX 3.

If one of those god-damn EA DJs is in this game I might just give up all together…

    • DJ Atomika announcing Röyksopp’s Poor Leno as you set off down one of the fastest, craziest most fun races there is in SSX3 is one of the finest moments in gaming history!

In fact I’ve just put Melody AM on now and am reminiscing the slopes…

      • As have I, love this album.

        Poor LEEEENNNNOOOO

      • Ooh, good shout! Little Leno does some skiing in the video too.

      • That was great, as was hearing the Jason Nevis remix of N.E.R.D’s Almost Over Now. But my point remains, DJ Atomika was a nob.

  10. *facepalmage*
