Nintendo Partners with Broadcasters for 3D Video

The Nintendo press conference is going on in Amsterdam (and New York) right now. They’re showing off the 3DS and talking about many of the features it will have. Most of them we’ve heard about previously and we won’t spam your news stream with them now.

One thing we hadn’t heard of before is the delivery of “short form” 3D video content from broadcasting partners including Eurosport, BSkyB and Aardman Animation (who are making short films in 3D exclusive to the system).

This potentially means goal updates from European leagues delivered via the WiFi-sensing Spot Pass system that automatically connects to hot spots and downloads content to the bundled (in the EU, at least) 2GB SD card. It’s mostly specualtion at the moment but the possibilities are very interesting indeed.

It’s also worth noting that Spot Pass is for downloading content automatically but it’s an addition to, rather than replacement for, the previously mentioned Street Pass system for local area multiplayer and information exchange between users.

We’ll bring you more as we hear it and Dan will be on hand with his impressions of everything he sees just as soon as he can.

  1. With such a short battery life, surely these videos are really going to limit how long the thing can stay on for.

  2. As my avatar may indicate, i’m quite fond of all Aardman Animation’s work. It will annoy me slightly not being able to view their new 3D short films but i probably won’t be buying a 3DS, not that i will neccessarily buy a PSP2 either. I might think differently when i’ve held one in my hands though so who knows..
